Washington Business Journal updates the Third Church of Christ saga:

“All that’s left to do is to knock the old building down.

In its place, JBG and ICG Properties will construct a 141,026-square-foot commercial building — 125,190 square feet of office, 4,098 square feet of retail and 11,738 square feet of religious space — designed by Robert A.M Stern Associates.”

They say Miller & Chevalier law firm will be the anchor tenant. We judged the 1971 designed building here. Will anyone miss it?

In the beginning of the week we learned that Newton’s Noodles hoped to open this week pending DCRA approval. They got it. From a press release:

“Chorks and fuzu have officially arrived in Dupont: Newton’s Noodles, the new fast-casual concept from award-winning Executive Chef Dennis Friedman, opens today at 11 a.m. The restaurant revolves around Friedman’s signature fuzu, a customizable noodle dish that gained popularity at the chef’s acclaimed Bethesda restaurant, Newton’s Table.

Friedman created his signature fuzu (shrimp, scallops, chicken, egg, carrots, snowpeas, onions, bean sprouts, scallions, crispy shallots and black sesame) on his first day as an executive chef and later brought it to Newton’s Table, where it gained a formidable critical and popular following. The dish serves as the foundation of the Newton’s Noodles menu: guests can order the original or customize with their choice of noodle, protein, sauce and vegetables. And, all varieties of the made-to-order fuzu will be prepared using all-natural, locally-sourced ingredients prepared at a speedy clip. Friedman has perfected the dish throughout his tenure at both restaurants, a taste he describes as “the perfect mix of salty and sweet, with a touch of heat.” (more…)

‏@NatlAquarium tweets:

“As we reflect on the closure of our DC facility today, we just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for their amazing support.”

Back in May we learned of the coming closure at the Commerce Building:

“The collection of more than 1,500 animals will be transitioned to new homes at either National Aquarium, Baltimore, or at other accredited aquariums.

Established in 1873, the National Aquarium, Washington, DC, first opened its doors to visitors in 1885 with a collection of 180 species of fish, reptiles and other aquatic animals.”

Though originally aiming for a July opening, the wait continues for Newton’s Noodles to open Downtown. On Sept. 27th they write on their facebook page:

“We apologize for any confusion and the delay. We are doing everything we can to get DCRA to give us the green light. We hope it will be by early next week. We will keep you posted. Thank you for your patience.”

You can see their menu here.

“Dear PoPville,

I’m curious if you know anything about a man who sits on the 15th Street side of McPherson Square each morning and says good morning to everyone. I bike by ~6:45am most mornings and get a very nice “good morning, biker!” that never fails to make my day. In any case, thought somone might know something about him and I would love to know his story.”

The Washington Post reported:

“Target is considering opening a store in downtown Washington, at 11th and E streets NW, in space once occupied mainly by ESPN Zone.

The building, 555 12th St. NW, is for sale. A new owner has not been named, and it is not clear whether whoever buys the building would want the rather ubiquitous red Target symbol stamped on the bottom of it.”

Do you think a Target would do well in this location?

I still think a B.B. King’s Blues Club would be a better fit…
