I’m a huge fan of Social located at 14th and Meridian, NW in Columbia Heights. Just thought I’d mention that they’ve added some new options to their menu that sounds awesome:

hand formed with gorgonzola and pickled onions

Chicken Souvlaki with cucumber mint 7/13/18
grilled pita filled with marinated chicken, cucumber yogurt and regional salsa

Miso Glazed Chicken Skewer 6/11/15
grilled breast of young chicken , skewered and served with peanut curry dipping sauce

Vegetable Tempura with sweet soy chili sauce 7/13/18
deep fried green beans, cremini mushrooms, red peppers and zucchini

Chicken Cordon Bleu 8/14/19
pounded chicken wrapped into havarti cheese, breaded and fried served with a 10 cane rum honey mustard

You can see the full menu after the jump. (more…)

Back in October we saw a great video on Shaw. Agent Phil Di Ruggiero writes:

“I call Columbia Heights home and have always LOVED the neighborhood. We shot the video over a couple days in October all around the hood and had the greatest time interviewing the people who make this neighborhood so special. My dog Carlos is in it too and is likely to be a fan favorite with his bag of tricks. It is such a pleasure to live and work in this dynamic neighborhood and I hope your readers enjoy the video as much as we had fun making it.”

I received the greatest email this weekend from Manager Phi Nguyen announcing the grand opening of Columbia Heights’ newest Pho spot this Thursday. It turns out the name will be Pho Viet and I stopped by on Sunday to take some sneak peek photos (though there was a bit of finishing touches still going on).

It’s relatively small but actually much bigger than I initially thought. It looks like it will be able to sit around 25 or 30. The manager was super nice and encourages any patrons to make recommendations that they’d like to see. So the grand opening is Thursday and those dining in from the 17th – 20th will receive a 20% discount to celebrate the opening. You can see their take out menu below (the dine in menu was still being finalized though I imagine it won’t be too different):

carry out menu–Pho Viet

Most of the Pho is $7.50 and most other options are in the $7-$8 range. I can’t wait to try this place out and see how it compares to Pho 14 on Park Road.

Pho Viet is located at 3513 14th Street, NW (at Parkwood Place) and will be open Tuesday – Thursday: 10am – 9:30pm; Friday – Saturday: 10am – 10:30pm; and Sunday: 10am – 8:30pm: Closed Monday. Delivery will be available with a $15 minimum (202-629-2839).

It’s been a long time coming but I finally got to check out the Chipotle coming to Columbia Heights on 14th Street just south of Kenyon. And I have to say, well, it’s a Chipotle. Which is to say it’s awesome. Though, it’s much like many of the other Chipotles I’ve visited. But I’m very excited to have this option not too far away. I suspect it is going to be insanely crowded.

Here’s a bit of potential scuttlebutt – I ran into Council Member (Ward-4) Muriel Bowser at this pre-opening event and she said she’s going to encourage a similar opening in Ward 4, perhaps in one of the spaces by the Petworth metro.

While I’d love an Italian Bistro I also think Chipotle in Petworth would be a nice addition (though fear not my love for Taco Bell has not faded…) (more…)

Ward-1 Council Member Jim Graham writes on his Web site:

Our friends in Northwest Columbia Heights, in the Spring/Perry and Oak Street areas along 14th Street have a great deal to be thankful for. There are several new businesses, moving into the attractive space created by the renovation of apartment buildings. Other renovations, some done by building owners, some forced by the city and some completely city managed are underway.

What we found in the walkthrough is that more work still needs to be done. We received reports that the drug territory we thought we had taken back is now being invaded by dealers from other neighborhoods. And in one case the dealer moving in is from Maryland. The police are aware of the problem and are actively investigating.

Last week we learned that Vegetate was closing at 1414 9th Street, NW. Immediately folks from all different neighborhoods were hoping to lure Vegetate to their part of town. It’s understandable as they have tons of fans. Well, I heard from a very reliable source that the owners were spotted touring the new building at 11th and Park Road, NW on Monday. I’m sure they’ll be touring a number of spots but it’s exciting that they’re considering this section of 11th Street. Remember this is the spot where the bar/restaurant Meridian Pint will take the basement and first floor (I hear that the bar is close to being built!). Vegetate would presumably take over the second floor making this building absolutely amazing.

So what do you guys think – would Vegetate be a good fit for this section of 11th Street?

From Orr Shtuhl:

“I’m hosting a beer tasting at the Red Derby (3718 14th St, NW) this Thursday at 8pm. I’m having it in the back room with the pool table, so it’s going to be really fun and informal, kind of like an ideal night at Derby plus good beer.

The beers are all ones they offer at the bar, so if you come, you might discover a new favorite. We’ll try 8 beers, and I’m setting them up as 4 side-by-side comparisons, to make things interesting.

While I’m a devotee of Tecate at the Red Derby this sounds like fun.

The flier says:

“Sleek, modern finishes highlight the original architectural details of this completely renovated 1913 row house! Features includes gorgeous hardwood floors, exposed brick, a stunning gourmet kitchen with recycled glass counter tops, stylish cabinetry with frosted glass, high end stainless steel appl including a range hood, luxury baths, and a finished basement with rec room!”

You an find more info and photos here.

While I don’t see too many of the original architectural details the place does look nice. I’ve always been a fan of the exposed brick. And what surely won’t be a surprise to many – I think this is an amazing location. What do you guys think of the renovation? Does $499,990 sound reasonable for this 3 bed/2 bath?

From DDOT’s Web site:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host a public meeting on Monday, December 7 to update the community on the Ward 1 Columbia Heights Performance Based Parking Pilot Zone. The meeting will also be an opportunity for residents, businesses, churches and other stakeholders to provide feedback on the parking operations implemented under the Performance Based Parking Pilot Zone Act of 2008.

Columbia Heights is one of two commercial areas in the District where DDOT has established a special pilot parking program. The goal is to protect neighborhood parking, spur regular turnover of metered spaces around commercial establishments, promote other modes of transportation and reduce congestion using a variety of tools including variable parking meter rates and time limits.

At the meeting DDOT will discuss the progress of the program and the topics will include:

* An update on the revenue generated from multi-space meters.
* An update on signage improvements and non-automotive transportation modifications scheduled for the pilot zone (using meter revenue).
* Recommendations from community stakeholders for 2010.

Meeting Information:

What: Public Meeting on Performance Based Parking Pilot
When: Monday, December 7, 2009, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Where: Columbia Heights Community Center
1480 Girard Street, NW
