Nevermind that the list seems a bit arbitrary. Never mind that Ballston is on it. PoPville represent!

From a press release:

As Americans widely embrace the “green revolution”, residents of the greater D.C. area interested in eco-friendly living should check out the newly released Top Green Neighborhood list published by MRIS, the nation’s largest multiple listings service (MLS) which offers nearly 75,000 local homes listings via its consumer website, Homesdatabase.com.

MRIS compiled the list by collecting the most recent MLS data, and surveying local parks and area green initiatives. Based on this hyperlocal data, MRIS notes the following as the top green neighborhoods in the greater D.C. area:

* Ballston (VA)
Ballston is showing clear efforts to educate the public about environmental improvements, through its initiative to reduce emissions, and its innovation in building Virginia’s first LEED platinum house.

* Bethesda (MD)
Bethesda is home to DC’s first Passive Design House. It also has a number of green initiatives to cut greenhouse gas emissions and implement green jobs.

* Capitol Hill (DC)
Capitol Hill is abundant with green homes and buildings and offers close proximity to the city’s largest farmer’s market and famous green spaces and gardens -most notably the Botanical Gardens.

* Crestwood (DC)
Crestwood borders Rock Creek Park, which contains 1,754 acres of green space and nature-related activities. Crestwood also has a neighborhood plan to conserve and preserve their community.

* Columbia Heights(DC)
Columbia Heights is home to DC’s first solar powered condos, as well as DC’s largest residential solar thermal project.

* Mount Rainier (MD)
Mount Rainier has a number of green building initiatives and projects, as well as an abundance of green space including the Mount Rainier Nature and Recreation Center.

* Old Town Alexandria (VA)
Old Town Alexandria is the home to the first LEED certified condo building in the state of Virginia. It also takes part in all of Alexandra’s green initiatives, including the Green Building Policy and the Go Green Alexandria project.

* Petworth (DC)
Petworth is home to DC’s first LEED platinum condo development and it encompasses a number of parks and lush green areas, including Rock Creek Cemetery.

* Takoma Park (MD)
Takoma Park features 17 acres of green space and parks, including Sligo Creek Park. It is also home to a number of green buildings and community projects.

* Woodley Park (DC)
Woodley Park is surrounded by green space and offers a number of public transportation options. Woodley Park is in walking distance to the National Zoo and a number of local parks, including the largest in DC, Rock Creek Park.

Back at the end of March we learned a few details about the bar that was coming to fill the old Social space at 14th and Meridian Pl, NW. I’ve got a few more details to share, starting with the name – The Getaway. You’ll may recall the 70s/80s car chase theme. I’m digging the name. You?

I’m also able to share some of the menu options which will include:

Wings, Calamari, Burgers, Crab cakes, Steak sliders, bbq, flatbreads, salads, fish, chicken, pasta/pesto and more.

The Getaway is still aiming to open in early May and I’ll post the menu in full when it is finalized at that time.

“Dear PoP,

I think about the story behind this home every time I walk past. It’s on the stretch of Euclid between 11th and 13th and is the only decrepit house on the block. Looks as though as one time it must have been an incredibly grand family home. The windows on the side (you unfortunately can’t see from the photos) are beautiful and amazing. Unfortunately, the roof looks to be rotting out, the porch is crumbling, bricks are visibly loose in several spots, it’s boarded up and the yard is completely overgrown. There’s also a rusted out old shell of a car on blocks in the rear.

I am constantly wondering what the deal is with this place and whether or not it’s being held on to until it seems like the “right” time to turn it in to another condo building. I hope that eventually it can regain some of its past grandeur and I am hopeful that somebody is finally stepping up to take care of this property–from my last look at the back it *almost* looks like there are new windows and a new support has been added under a corner of the roof. The front gate is bolted with a rusted out padlock and I couldn’t see any visible permits but it would be great to have this home fit in with the rest of the block.

Would love to know if anybody knows the status of this property and if it may indeed be on the turn-around.”

Ed. Note: When breaking news occurs I usually post about it on twitter before the site here. You can follow PoPville on twitter here. You can also always send tips and photos to princeofpetworth(at)gmail.com. Thanks to all, especially HH57, for providing updates on last night’s terrible incident.

Per above, around 11pm a reader tweets, “police tape and cop cars out on 11th in between Park and Lamont. Rumors of a stabbing outside Chinese takeout place.”

A few moments later via email a reader writes, “Just walked out my front door to discover a stabbing right in front of the Grand China Carryout on the corner of 11th and Lamont NW 20 feet from the dog park.”

On twitter I was sent the horrible evidence (below) from HH57. It was noted that this particular area has been known as a hot spot for crime. (Personally I saw an arrest there last week at around 3pm in the afternoon.)

MPD tells me:

“We had a Latino male who was inside carryout and went outside carryout and saw two Latino males he began to argue with … he then went back into the carryout and the two males came in and one stabbed the victim..they then fled out the carryout SB on 11th ST … unknown motive”

More info as it becomes available.

“Dear PoP,

El Salvadoreño on 14th and Parkwood Pl, NW. Is it closed? Please? Lights have been off and there hasn’t been any traffic there in a couple weeks. Police in the neighborhood said “shady” things would go on there in there so maybe they finally cracked down? Would love to see Panam expand or that great space get turned into something nicer.”

I’ve actually heard some rumors that the Panam International Supermarket was thinking about expanding but I had heard they were going to expand up. Does anyone shop at Panam?

Anyone else happen to notice if El Salvadoreño has closed?

I’ll be sure to update as details emerge.

Well this is freaking awesome. The Meridian Hill Neighborhood Association has a new initiative – they write:

“I wanted to let you know about a new MHNA initiative this year- an online compilation of neighborhood history. It’s just a start, but we’ve already unearthed some cool things: 1922 video footage of President Harding unveiling the Joan of Arc sculpture, a documentary on the New School of African American Thought (once at 2208 14th St), a full historic review of the 1300 block of Florida Ave, etc. In the coming month 3 graduate students from Georgetown will be interviewing some of the neighborhood’s older residents, writing up transcripts and posting them on our new site. We also hope to add more old photos too.

If you (or your readers) have old photos/videos/articles about the neighborhood, we’d love to scan & post them.”

But what got me super psyched is this 1922 video footage they found. Even though there is no sound the footage is mesmerizing. You can watch the video here. The explanation says:

“1922, January 6. Ceremony of unveiling a statue of Jeanne d’Arc in Meridian Park. Crowd assembled for the ceremony. President and Mrs Warren G Harding arrive at ceremony. Officials speak at stand. Unveiling of Jeanne d’Arc statue. Flags on poles. Man places bouquet and flowers in front of the statue. Secretary of War, John W Weeks speaks. Side view of statue. Various officials speak at ceremony.”
