Carolina Market (3429 14th St, NW), not to be confused with the nearby Carolina Restaurant (3700 14th St, NW), has become Mi Casita Bakery. They are still stocking up but later in the week they’ll also offer some Tamales and Pollo options.

The Coupe opened in Columbia Heights to great anticipation back in early October. You can see their menus here. I guess we should make this a three parter – what are your initial thoughts on the coffee, food, and/or the drinks/bar?

Just a quick email about small crime in Columbia Heights: It may be recent warm weather, but it seems like there an increase in thuggery. Last Saturday, I parked my car on Columbia Rd right at 14th (on the east side of 14th) to run into 7-11. I was gone for literally 4-5 minutes and in that time someone had broken through my car window and stole a lot of my stuff, including my laptop, a hard drive, and even my clothes. This was at 12:30PM, in the middle of the day! The police told me that since I live in Columbia Heights I should have known better than to park there since I have out-of-state tags.
And just last night at 8:30, a friend of mine, who happens to be a martial arts instructor, had walked through a group of young guys who were just hanging outside of the CVS on 14th and Irving harassing people. These guys were getting up in everyone’s faces, even striking women and old people. Well, they made a mistake when they hit my friend because he immediately dropped the thug with a kick to the chest. My friend then proceeded to go into the CVS, but the rest of the group of hooligans followed him in there, looking to settle the score for their fallen comrade. He was able to diffuse the situation enough that he walked out of there without any more altercations, and then, luckily enough, a couple cops were patrolling by and dispersed the group.
I know I probably sound like a curmudgeonly old man, but I mention these because it seems like there’s been a recent uptick in this type of activity in Columbia Heights.

Back in late August we checked on the progress at Mad Momos coming to 3605 14th St, NW. It was looking very promising. Remember when it used to look like this? You can also see the amount of work that was done here. Now the space will make your jaw drop:

Yesterday morning my girlfriend and I discovered her car, parked on Pierce St (corner of 1st ST NE in NoMa, with a busted passenger side window, along with her car, there were at least 3 other cars with busted windows as well. This seems to mostly happen on this street only, so it might be good to warn people about not parking on this street. The police came promptly and even looked for fingerprints.

I live on Sherman Ave (near Lamont) in Columbia Heights and wanted to share something that happened on Saturday night. I was sitting in my house and saw something move out the corner of my eye – I looked up and saw nothing, but a minute later a man leaned over and looked into the window on my back door. I alerted my husband, who got up and we approached the door – the guy leaned in again, saw us, and ducked under the window and took off. We went out on the deck, and saw that he had run a couple houses over in our back alley, then stopped and was watching us. As my husband moved to go down the stairs, the guy took off.
He was wearing a black ski hat and obviously deliberately came all the way down our back alley and up on to our deck – scary thing is, he had to have seen me before I noticed him as I was in direct line of sight from the door, yet that did not seem to deter him from continuing to look into the house.
We notified the police and they did a patrol of the area. Haven’t heard anything since. I still think its generally safe as our neighbors tend to float around out back (for a late night smoke and so on). Just wanted to let more neighbors in the area know so they can be extra alert.

Thought you’d like to (if you don’t already) know about the new construction on meridian between 14th and 16th. Closer to 14th street. Not sure how this is approved by DCRA. Atrocious, no? Feel bad for neighbors.

The lighting ceremony will be Saturday, December 1st at 6:30pm at the Civic Plaza with students caroling and hot beverages. This year in addition to the tree lighting ceremony our partner, Collaborate to Impact, and several local restaurants are organizing multi-site happy holiday hours to raise funds for three nonprofits serving our area.
