The famous 11th street chicken when last spotted in 2008

From the Columbia Heights listserv:

“On Sunday morning, a black chicken was found wandering in the alley between Fairmont and Girard, between 11th and 13th. Did anyone lose a member of their flock during the storm?”

Another member noted that we had spoken about the famous 11th Street chicken (pictured here) back in July 2008. Unfortunately in the past we have discussed the possibility of illegal cock fighting in Columbia Heights. Let’s hope this is just another sighting of the famous 11th Street chicken surveying her domain.

From the events calendar:

After more than 10 years serving Columbia Heights and the residents of the Woodner Apartments, Sangria Cafe is closing its doors for good. If you’ve been before, you know the Sangria Cafe as one of the city’s most unique dive bars. If you’ve never had the pleasure, now’s your last chance!

The bar’s owners, Victor and Elizabeth, have created a welcoming and friendly atmosphere – and in one last gesture of community pride have offered to use one of their last nights in business to benefit Ayuda by donating 10% of ALL sales ALL night long. Ayuda has been helping the immigrant community in DC thrive for nearly 40 years so come out and show your support for drinking and non-profit organizations.

Help us send Sangria Cafe off right while also raising money for a great cause!

We judged the Sangria Cafe back in July 2009. Tony gave us a tour (lots of photos of the interior here) back in May 2010. We recently discussed our favorite no frills bars here. No word yet on who will be taking over the space, updates as more info becomes available.

A reader was nice enough to give me a tour of their renovated house in Columbia Heights and I was blown away by this sign.

It’s so easy to forget how things used to be…

I thought it was brilliant how they preserved and displayed this board formerly covering up a front window of the house:

Lou’s City Bar adds table taps in Columbia Heights. They have also launched a new menu – check it out below:

Lou’s NEW Menu

The folks from Lou’s add:

“The menu was put together by Adam Sobel, Columbia Heights resident (Kenyon Square Condominiums). Over a two month period, Adam spent considerable time at Lou’s, created the new menu and spec’d the ingredients. He is a multiple award winning chef and currently runs Bourbon Steak in Georgetown. One of his understudies, Michael Sanfilipo, has agreed to come on board to run the kitchen full time.”

They will have two tables with “table taps”:

Dear PoPville,

I wanted to update the story you published a couple weeks ago about the man exposing himself on Irving Street between Sherman and Georgia Ave. I have seen a man matching the original story’s description the past two days. Yesterday he was masturbating, and today he was exposing himself. Both times he has been on the north side of Irivng walking east towards Georgia Ave. He didn’t say anything to me as I passed by. I called MPD both times to note the incident. While it is disturbing for an adult to see something like that, I’m even more concerned now that there are lots of kids walking on that block on their way to school. The incidents happened around 7:45 and 7:30am.

3605 14th St, NW

Back in March 2012 we learned that Mad Momos beer garden and restaurant, coming to 3605 14th St, NW (at Perry Place) would be getting a sweet roof deck. We also took a look at the status of the renovations. Since March there has been a tremendous amount of progress and I’m happy to be able to share lots of photos. They are on track for an early Autumn opening. Stay tuned and follow their progress on their Facebook page. In the meantime – check out how amazing the space is starting to look.

Starting from the outside you’ll notice a new paint job and the old awning. But soon you won’t recognize the old awning as it will be completely covered in vines, starting with Carolina Jasmine:

Continuing the green theme, when you walk in the first floor you are greeted by the start of a future green wall and exposed brick. The walls will also featuring community art displays in the future:

The first floor also features a 20 foot bar:

The bar is made of reclaimed wood from the original house:

The first floor also features huge windows that open up bringing in lots of light:

Take the stairs to the 2nd floor:

Lots more photos of the 2nd floor and roof deck after the jump. (more…)
