J2W5RLTWQimHJ2C1vRB8_holmead park crosswalk petition

Thanks to all who emailed and tweeted the petition:

“Dear Councilmember Nadeau,

We are residents of Columbia Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods, including many parents of small children. Please help advocate for a crosswalk at the intersection of Holmead Place and Park Road. This is a major pedestrian thoroughfare connecting a dense residential area to the shopping, transportation, and recreation (including kids’ splash park) at the Columbia Heights plaza/metro area. The closest crosswalk to cross Park Road is a 3-minute walk in either direction (to 13th St. or 14th St.) As a result, it is common to count 10-20 people, including small children, jaywalking this intersection every minute! (So common, in fact, that Google maps’ image of that intersection, attached, actually shows a jaywalker in action!) This is very dangerous with all the turning cars, especially from the adjacent Giant parking lot entrance, and the Giant’s many delivery trucks — yet it’s not practical to expect people to walk so far out of their way to reach the nearest crosswalk. In sum, this is a very busy intersection in desperate need of a crosswalk. We hope you can help and thank you for your service!

Your neighbors and constituents”

If you have a photo of a neat find from your house or place of work please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail.com thanks. To those who have I sent – I promise I’m working through the queue!

A reader sends in from Chateau Du Sherm:

“While doing some work in the crawlspace of my 1911 rowhouse on Sherman Ave, I found a couple of interesting items (among many uninteresting ones) that I thought I’d share.

The first is a “Try-Me” soda bottle. The side of the bottle says “Drink Try-Me Beverages,” and the bottom says “Washington, DC Patented April 24, 1924.”

This website had some interesting history on the company. In particular, it notes the following about Try-Me: “A flavored beverage manufacturer, the company flourished from around 1924 to 1956, primarily in the southeast but also as far west as Oklahoma and as far north as New York State. Its headquarters ultimately were located at 1345 Florida Avenue NE, Washington, DC.”

I also found an old horseshoe, and not the kind used in the game. This one is quite small compared to the ones you throw, still has nails protruding from it, and is extremely worn on one side.”

From the MPD and Columbia Heights listservs:

“Public Safety in Columbia Heights

Many of you are aware there was a shooting yesterday in the Columbia Heights area as well as additional gun fire. I’m working closely with MPD to address these incidents. You’ve probably already noticed an additional MPD presence in the area as a part of the response.

I want to thank everyone who has come forward and assisted the police in their investigation. Anyone with additional information should please call the Metropolitan Police Department on 202-727-9099.

I also want to make sure people have received the information about the public safety meeting hosted by my office and ANCs 1B, 1A and 2B happening this Saturday, June 6 from 11:30am-2:30pm at Cardozo Education Campus. The topic will be crime prevention and how to protect yourself and help reduce crime in the community and it will have representatives from MPD, Emergency Services, Neighborhood Watch and other safety agencies.

I know there are many who feel frightened by the shootings, and I want to assure you that MPD is working diligently to address this issue, and appreciates your partnership in helping to solve the crime. The community working together is the best way to prevent future incidents. MPD is on the street, but also depends on community engagement and each resident sharing the information they observe.

Thank you for your engagement on this issue as we work to solve and prevent these kinds of incidents in the future. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you have any additional concerns: [email protected].

From the Columbia Heights Farmers Market [14th and Park Rd, NW in the Columbia Heights Plaza]:

“We want to make it easier for you. Just stop by after work and refill the pantry with fresh and healthy food. Columbia Heights Farmers’ Market will now also be operating from 4 pm to 7:30 pm every Wednesday from June 3 through September 30. This is your opportunity to find the best food in the city in the middle of the week.”

Chick Fil A aside (or perhaps another example of depending on your perspective), folks have been pretty frustrated and disappointed with all the vacant retail spaces in DC USA on 14th Street in Columbia Heights. I recently noticed all the new marketing signs – hopefully it helps. Let’s say there’s room for 10 new tenants – how many you think should be restaurants vs some other retail?
