From an email:

“I wanted to give you a follow- up to the previous statement that we are taking over the patio previously occupied by Firehook Bakery. That takeover starts this Friday August 28th for dinner at 5pm. Every night, we will have happy hour from 5pm- 7pm, and on Saturday and Sunday we will be offering brunch with bottomless mimosas, bellinis, and Prosecco.

In addition, we are offering that the community use the patio as a COVID- friendly workspace. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

About 2 months ago I was walking in Cleveland Park and I found a miniature polymer clay version of “The Scream” tucked into an empty apartment promotional box. I found it delightful. Cut to ~3wks ago when I was telling this patient about my funny little find and asked “oh, you mean the one in Rock Creek?” And my brain exploded. So far I’ve physically found two but I have confirmation of 2 more around Tregaron and Klingle Valley. (more…)

From WMATA:

“Metro activates severe weather plan for Hurricane Isaias impacts, Cleveland Park Station to be closed Tuesday

Cleveland Park Station will be closed, as the station’s entrances are located in an area that is prone to flash flooding. The station will reopen when conditions allow. Customers should use Van Ness or Woodley Park stations as alternate boarding locations. Bus service is available along Connecticut Ave. NW.

The north entrance at King Street Station will also be closed Tuesday due to the potential for flooding. Customers should use the station’s south entrance instead.”

A reminder why from the before times – June 21st, 2016: (more…)

When we spoke about Firehook’s coming in closure in Cleveland Park (it still stings) lots of folks emailed me that Coppi’s had closed/was closing too. While still sad, word on the street is that this closure may have happened with or without the virus. Again, still sad and a bummer to see another vacant space on the strip. (more…)

Earlier this morning when we posted about the coming closure of Firehook in Cleveland Park – a historical video gem emerged of the previous tenant (which is why they had such a great back patio.) Thanks to Justin Rood for passing on this extraordinary video found on Youtube about Roma from 1997:

“The last year in the life of the Roma, a legendary restaurant in Washington, DC that was a Cleveland Park staple from 1932 to its closing auction in 1997, along with adjoining tavern Poor Roberts. Posted in memory of owner Bobby Abbo.

This is devastating for the neighborhood, especially following the recent closure of the Uptown movie theater across the street. This Firehook had been open here since 1997. Not much to add beyond beyond Roric’s initial report: “Nooooooooooo”

On the heels of the Burgundy and Gold likely changing their name after mounting pressure…

Thanks to Maddox for sending the update on Tobacco Palace DC‘s opening in Cleveland Park:

“I was indifferent to the business but now they’ve unveiled an ACTUAL CIGAR STORE INDIAN in the front window. Can we NOT?”

This is the former Artisan lamp space that closed after 35 years back in 2017.

Thanks to Hayley for passing on from Tino’s Pizzeria in Cleveland Park:
