“The Bozzuto Group, a Greenbelt, Md.-based real estate services company, today announced that health-conscious, quick-serve restaurant Hälsa will join Monroe Street Market. Monroe Street Market is a multi-phase, mixed-use development located on five city blocks in Washington, D.C., immediately adjacent to the Brookland-CUA Metro station, and across the street from Catholic University.

Largely inspired by owner Emily Gaines’s global travels and experience with nourishing traditions surrounding food and health, Washington, D.C.-based Hälsa will bring local and sustainably sourced food to a 1,500-square-foot location in Monroe Street Market’s Portland Flats building. Construction is underway and the restaurant is expected to open in late fall.

Hälsa’s menu will promote a diet based on in-season, all natural, nutrient dense foods. The restaurant will feature locally sourced ingredients from D.C. area based farms such as Tree and Leaf, Next Step Produce, Eco-Friendly Foods, and The Farm at Sunnyside.

More Changes Coming to Little Ricky’s in Brookland – Applying for Tavern’s License under name Gin Rummy

Changes continue for Little Ricky’s which closed for summer vacation back in July. A liquor license placard has gone up under the trade name Gin Rummy stating they wish to:

“Request a class change from Retailer Class “C” Restaurant to Retailer Class “C” Tavern.”

A reader sends word after a bit of sleuthing that it: “does not look a change in ownership, just another change of restaurant type. I tried to peek inside, but didn’t see much. Bar is still in-tact, but all tables have been ripped out with quite a few wires hanging about (which would lead me to think they’re doing a decent gut-job.”

“My son, Joe Madden, has been missing since Monday. Joe is 23, about 6’1″ and 170lbs. Hazel eyes. Last seen in NE Washington, DC on Monday morning Sept 29 around 10:30 am. We have filed a police report but there’s nothing else the police can do. None of his friends have heard from him since Sunday. He doesn’t have his phone with him.

“Art Under the Stars is a collaboration between Monroe Street Market, Arts Walk at Monroe Street, Union Kitchen and Listen Local First. This evening of food, beer, music, art and theater is a celebration of all things DC and all things Fall.

Blind Pug Arts Collective,a DC based collective of theatre artists will host an afternoon of live outdoor theater. Plays will be written by Katherine Clair, Robert Montenegro, and Timothy Guillot, and directed by Linda Lombardi.

Following the theater performance Listen Local First will present an evening of Funk, Rock, Reggae and Afrobeat featuring the amazing Joe Keyes and the Late Bloomer Band. Joe Keyes and his band will “takes audiences back to the days of Miles Davis and early P-Funk, when big bands were lead by strong forces of individuals.”

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fifth District announced a suspect has been arrested in connection with multiple burglaries that occurred in the Fifth and Fourth District.

Following an investigation, on Thursday, September 25, 2014, 18-year-old, Jonathan Stover of Northeast, Washington, DC, was charged in connection with these offenses.

901 Monroe Update (former Colonel Brooks Tavern Plot) back to “the zoning panel for further review”

Folks write in about the former Colonel Brooks Tavern plans about once a month. Finally an update from the Washington Business Journal:

The appeals court ruling remands the PUD to the zoning panel for further review, to decide whether the project is too dense for the community, to address the policy that requires protection of existing homes on the site, and “to determine whether, in light of the commission’s conclusions on these issues, the commission should grant or deny approval of the project.”

WBJ notes that the project previously “was approved for more than 200 apartments and 13,000 square feet of retail.” You can read the full 901 Monroe D.C. Court of Appeals Decision here.
