“Dear PoPville,

I heard Straw, Stick, and Brick Delicatessen on Georgia Ave is re-opening. It’d be so great if that was true. SSB had great food and was a kinda fun place to meet Petworth and Brightwood Park neighbors.

I was wondering if you might know whether the re-opening rumors are true?”

What I’ve learned is that the business was sold, name and all, back in September. Now I don’t know if the new owners have decided to keep the name or not but since they bought it and already have the nice awning – I’m guessing they’ll keep the name. As to what the new Straw Stick & Brick will be – obviously there will be a major food component but I think there will also be a major coffee component. So to sum up – new owners will be opening something here soon that may or may not be named Straw Stick & Brick. And there may be coffee. STAY TUNED.

Ed. Note: This tipster has a 97% accuracy rating.

So let’s get right to it – I hear the folks from the incredibly popular Showtime bar in Bloomingdale will be bringing a new bar to north country on Georgia Ave near Kennedy Street. Showtime opened in Bloomingdale back in 2013 and are perennially placed on all the ‘best of’ lists around town. Deservedly so. STAY TUNED.

UPDATE 3:27pm:

I was just at the corner of Georgia Ave. and Kennedy and spoke to the building’s property manager, who told me that a licensed structural engineer looked at the wall in the basement of the Lucky Corner building today. The structural engineer determined it’s not a danger to the public.

The structural engineer’s report will be completed tomorrow and it’s expected that the Lucky Corner store will be cleared to open.

Best regards,
Nancy

A reader reports Sunday 8:30pm:

“Just heard six shots fired around 5th and Kennedy NW. I see lots of police driving around. They were in the alley between 4th and 5th and Kennedy and Jefferson for a long time last night. Just talked to the MPD (Monday). Six casings found in the alley. No “victims.”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in Brigthwood on Longfellow b/w 7th & 8th Street. Last night around 11:10 my girlfriend and I heard ten gun shots go off outside our window. There were about 5 or 6 police cars patrolling the neighborhood and then what appeared to be police officers set up on Longfellow searching for shell casings. I searched news and mpd sources but didn’t see any mention of it. Just reaching out to see if anyone else has reported to you.”

On an MPD listserv a resident inquired:

“We heard 8 gunshots last night at 11:15pm around Emerson or Farragut and maybe 5th St. Is there any more information you can give us?”

Additionally, this morning, a reader reported hearing shots fired near 7th and Gallatin NW but MPD says: “There have been no reported sound of gunshots this morning near 7th and Gallatin NW”

Update from MPD 2:30pm:

The MPD Units immediately responded towards the gunfire and began canvassing the area.

While the units were canvassing, a victim called 911 and reported that a stray bullet had gone through his bedroom window and struck the bedroom wall in the 600 block of Longfellow Street, N.W. The victim reported hearing 5 gunshots, followed by a brief pause, then the sound of car tires screeching. Immediately after the victim heard the car speed away, he heard another louder gunshot which shattered his bedroom window and struck the bedroom wall. Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of these gunshots. Several other witnesses were interviewed, and reported similar accounts. (more…)
