Haunted House at Parker Flats Halloween Night

“This year we have scaled up significantly…Bloomingdale will be overrun by Zombies!

The event is completely free to anyone and everyone. We give out candy to the little ones at the end, and some adults who need a little comforting, and it’s all put on 100% by volunteers from Parker Flats. So now, in conjunction with the Thomas Street Halloween Festival, which started up again in 2012, 2nd Street has become quite the place to be on Halloween night.

If anyone wants to stop by the haunted house is located at 2035 2nd St. NW (The Parker Flats at Gage School Condo Building), and we open the gates at 6:30pm and run until 9:30pm. We recommend showing up nice and early because the line gets real long and if you want to go through more than once it can be a bit of a wait. We also encourage anyone who attends to make sure they stop by Thomas Street’s Festival that night as well. Between the Haunted House and Thomas Street, it is a fantastic way to spend Halloween night.”

Future McMillan Development Hoping to Start Construction Summer 2014 – Check Out Some Awesome Renderings

Last week a reader asked about the plans for the McMillan Sand Filtration Site. Thanks to the folks at Envision McMillan for sending these awesome renderings of the planned McMillan Development. I’m told if all goes well “We are hoping to get shovels in the ground by summer 2014 and deliver the first buildings in 2016.”

They write on their website:

“Earlier this month, VMP submitted revised plans for McMillan that address the remaining concerns raised by the Historic Preservation Review Board at the June hearing. The Historic Preservation Officer has posted their report on the new designs and it’s pretty fabulous news.

Key highlights include the following direct quotes:

“(T)he latest version of the master plan represents a significant improvement over previous versions and now retains the significant above-grade topographical, architectural and engineering features that were identified by the Board as the most important.”

“The revised master plan would retain significant character-defining features of the landmark sufficient to convey its historic character.”

The report recommends, specifically, that the Board “find the concept designs to represent an architecturally coordinated and cohesive approach that specifically relates to the character of the McMillan site.”

“I just saw some minutes from a meeting today that included some discussion on the plans for the McMillan reservoir in Bloomingdale and it says “mixed use retail and residential buildings.”

I’m wondering what “mixed use retail” even means. Does that mean a grocery store? Or, maybe it’s just a typo…”

Green Paws Closing in Bloomingdale will Become Upstairs Seating for Bacio Pizzeria

“We are so sorry to tell you that after three wonderful years, we are closing Green Paws. The decision was a difficult one. Our tiny little shop has been struggling for a while in this weak economy, and ultimately the arrival of a giant corporate pet food retailer so nearby meant we had even more difficulty competing. We really have grown to love our neighborhood dogs and cats (as well as their people!), and we promise to always have special little treats available for our four-legged buddies downstairs at Bacio. Speaking of Bacio, here is the silver lining: we are going to expand, and use the upstairs space for seating. We hope you can look forward to a low-key, family-friendly dining experience where you can enjoy the pizza you’ve come to love with a nice bottle of wine. We don’t have an exact timeline yet for all this, but we promise to keep you posted.

Yesterday we learned that a new pub/restaurant was coming to Bloomingdale. Following are more very good details from one of the owners who happens to also be one of the owner’s of DC Reynolds (3628 Georgia Ave):

“We just signed a lease at 1648 North Capitol St NW – a long-vacant building we intend to breathe some life into. Here are some details:

The Pub and the People, coming to Bloomingdale at 1648 North Capitol Street NW will be a neighborhood restaurant and bar with 70 seats indoors and a potential for up to 100 outdoors. The largest patio in the area will also provide a view of the U.S. Capitol Building (which will be nice, assuming it ever reopens). Indoors, the space will bring the atmosphere of DC’s early pubs and restaurants. Think exposed brick and wood, not suspenders.

We have recruited Chef Dan Dalcin, currently Sous Chef at the award-winning Black Salt in Palisades. Chef Dan’s menu will offer traditional American cuisine, and will draw influence from several other cuisine types: Southern, Southwestern, Seafood, Asian, and Vegetarian. Chef Dan has promised us generous portions (no small plates!) of great food, using local ingredients whenever possible, and some interesting new twists on old favorites. Vegetarian options will even be hearty, new and exciting – not your typically lackluster mushroom burger or eggplant sandwich.

Drinks will include craft beers and cocktails with an emphasis on DC-based breweries and distilleries.

Construction will begin before the end of the year with a summer 2014 opening anticipated.”

Big Bloomingdale News – New Bar, Pub and the People, Coming to North Capitol and R Street, NW

In last week’s rant/revel a reader mentioned that a new bar was coming to Bloomingdale at the corner of North Capitol and R St, NW. It’s true! It will be called Pub and the People. The reader notes that demo had already started. Updates as construction progresses.

From a press release:

“DC Water selects Skanska/Jay Dee Joint Venture to build First Street Tunnel, a measure to reduce localized flooding in NW DC

The DC Water Board of Directors yesterday approved the construction contract to build the First Street Tunnel, a key medium-term measure to address localized flooding in the Northeast Boundary neighborhoods including Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park. Constructing the tunnel was one of the recommendations of the Task Force on the Prevention of Flooding in Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park created by Mayor Vincent C. Gray after a series of floods last year.

Skanska/Jay Dee Joint Venture was selected based on technical score and cost proposal. The $157 million bid is for design-build, a contract type DC Water has been pioneering in recent years. Design-build allows for more contractor innovation and greater coordination with the contract owner. Design-build teams also assume a portion of the design responsibility.

This project consists of a 19-foot-diameter tunnel running under First Street from Channing Street to Rhode Island Avenue, NW. Slated for completion in 2016, the tunnel will store eight million gallons of stormwater, capturing it before it can make its way to the combined sewer system. The stormwater will be stored in the tunnel during rainstorms and pumped into the sewer system once the storms subside. This should help alleviate some of the sewer backups and overland flooding experienced in the low-lying neighborhoods; however, relief during the more severe storms will come in the final phases of the DC Water Clean Rivers Project.
