From an email:

“I wanted to send over the details of Sebastian Zutant’s second collaboration beer with DC Brau that’s launching Tuesday, October 1st. Sebastian is the co-owner/beverage director at The Red Hen.

This one is called the Dorcia and they’re brewing it by aging the Penn Quarter Porter on the lees of RdV’s Rendezvous blend in a Bordeaux barrel from Linden. It’s then removed and filtered. The result is a red wine driven, robust porter with a strong chocolate finish. It’s smoky, complex and great for fall.

They’ve made eight kegs and will be serving it for $9 a pint.”

From a press release:

“A year ago this month the Mayor’s Task Force on the Prevention of Flooding in Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park announced a series of short-term relief measures to lessen the impacts of flooding in these neighborhoods. Since then, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and DC Water have aggressively implemented several of these immediate efforts to mitigate the flooding as part of the District’s approximately $3 billion infrastructure improvement program.

This past spring DDOT installed catch basins (i.e., storm drains) on the 500 and 600 blocks of Florida Avenue NW and the unit block of T Street NW to help divert water from area roadways and alleviate flooding. DDOT also installed a new sewer line and double catch basin at the intersection of 2nd Street and Rhode Island Avenue NW to add capacity to the sewer system.

In early July DDOT also completed a major step in an ongoing project — the installation of a five-foot-wide storm sewer line under the median of the 100 block of Rhode Island Avenue NW to help remove stormwater from the roadway and store it before slowly releasing it into the sewer system. The storm sewer was originally slated to be completed by Labor Day, but was completed in early July — two months ahead of schedule.

“Mother Nature wasn’t going to wait around for us to get the job done, so we made great strides to complete this ahead of schedule and prepare the community for potentially damaging summer storms,” Mayor Gray said. (more…)

Last week I shared some scuttlebutt about a Tex-Mex restaurant coming to the former Y.E.S.S.S. Uniforms space in Bloomingdale. This morning Eater DC confirms:

“The owners of 1905 Restaurant have a new project in store. Tony Lucca & Phil Rodriguez (also of Sticky Rice) have signed a lease for a new venture in Bloomingdale. The restaurant will be located at 108 Rhode Island Ave. NW and serve Mexican food and Latin cocktails.”

Sweet!

Yes! Work has finally started at the former Y.E.S.S.S. Uniforms space in Bloomingdale. And some scuttlebutt I’m hearing is starting off 5774 very sweetly indeed. This is pretty prime space located down the block from Rustik, around the corner from Red Hen, across the street from Showtime and in between Grassroots Bakery and Boundary Stone. I’m hearing it is going to become a Tex-Mex restaurant and there could be some connection from the owners of Sticky Rice. Think Tex-Mex would be a good addition to the burgeoning dining scene in Bloomingdale?

“Dear PoPville,

A heads up to Bloomingdale residents. My husband’s Vespa was stolen from our parking area in the alley behind on our house First St NW last night. A neighbor’s security footage shows the thieves backed a Penske van into the parking area and loaded the Vespa by lifting it into the van, so wheel locks don’t help. There is other footage of them generally casing the entire area a few times, so people need to be aware. The police have been notified.”

It’s been a while since we checked in on the Bloomingdale/North Capitol Street Firehouse. A liquor license application posted out front lists the name Washington Firehouse Restaurant/Washington Smokehouse and says:

New Tavern with entertainment limited to music and musicians only. Cigar Bar in the rear of 3rd floor. Seating capacity is 322. Total load is 370. Summer Garden with seating for 85 patrons.

Hours will be Sunday through Thursday 8am-2am; Friday and Saturday 8am-3am.

Ed. Note: It’s not clear to me if this is the same group that will be opening the Truxton Kitchen and other spots. The firehouse has at times been referred to as Engine 12. To say it’s history has been confusing is an understatement…

Stay tuned.
