admo movie night

PoPville gets to pick the first film again this year! The choices are: Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep, or Despicable Me 2. Vote here:

From Adams Morgan Movie Nights:

“Adams Morgan Movie Nights kicks off on Tuesday, May 17th.

We show 5 films on consecutive Tuesday evenings at the Marie Reed school soccer field — which happens to be perfect for throwing a picnic blanket down before the film starts. The first film is always a family friendly animated film as a nod to the Marie Reed School, which graciously their grounds with us.

WHERE: 18th and California NW. (Adams Morgan)

WHEN: 30 mins after sunset. May 17th, 24th, 31st. June 6th, 14th and rain date of 6/21

WHY: Because experiencing free films on a huge screen under the stars is one of best “accessible for all” community cultural events left in the city.”

“Dear PoPville,

Have you been following the Adams Morgan SunTrust plaza redevelopment discussions? Obviously its an eyesore as it currently exists, but it will be a real bummer if we lose the farmers market.

Here’s a message from Star Hollow Farm, which has a CSA drop off there year-round and participates in the farmers market in season.”

SunTrust Plaza – Community Meeting on April 20th at 7:00 PM
PLEASE COME AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNITY PLAZA AND THE FARMERS MARKET

Hello CSA members,

We are writing to provide an update concerning developer PN Hoffman’s proposed plans for the SunTrust property where we have our market and CSA handouts.  PN Hoffman has submitted revised plans to ANC1C, which can be viewed here, under the “revised design drawings” link (it takes about a minute to download):

http://anc1c.org/index.php/library/category/178-proposed-development-at-1800-columbia-road-nw-currently-the-suntrust-building-and-plaza

Plans were revised based on public input re maintaining the farmers market and open space, which the developer learned there was strong interest in. While the revised plans preserve a small plaza, that space will be used primarily by PN Hoffman’s own commercial tenant, and does not leave any room whatsoever to host our weekly farmers market or the other community uses to which the space is put from time to time. As such, the revised plan fails to comply with the multi-year “Envision Adams Morgan” community planning process that included the following recommendation: (more…)

“Please keep your eyes peeled for a kitty who went missing in the Adams Morgan neighborhood just South of Columbia Road and Ontario Road last night. My friends adopted him just a couple of weeks ago from the Humane Society. He tore a hole in a window screen and escaped from their apartment at 2800 Ontario Road. He was last seen around midnight a half block away on The Ontario apartment grounds. His name is Leonard and he’s very friendly.

If you see him, please call my friends (202-615-4411) or me (202-986-5397) ASAP.”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in Kalorama triangle / adams morgan on mintwood pl. Two weeks ago my brand new road bike was stolen from mintwood, even with a u lock, and only out from 5-10pm. Yesterday my car was broken into, and they stole golf clubs set from trunk. Nothing was out in the car cabin to draw attention. And today I see what looks like the ol’ sign post removal trick and a bike missing that is always parked there.

This is part rant, part seeking of a psa: bring anything of value inside. Your “safe” address is not a shield, and your u lock will do nothing to a determined thief. Get rental insurance with a low deductible. Be vigilant and report suspicious activity. Consider taking the city up on vouchers for police-accessible home security cameras.”

A reader reports:

“Spoke with an employee and was told the inside is being redone and a relaunch of an Italian restaurant is going where spaghetti garden is located. Saw a draft menu online. No idea when it was opening. Hopefully soon since Pasta Mia closed.”

Spaghetti Garden’s website says:

“It all began in 1980 with two brothers and a dream.

In 1980 brothers Solemin and Iraj set foot in Adams Morgan and began preparing food they enjoyed eating upon arriving in America. They opened what was then the second restaurant in Adams Morgan and it was a great hit. Times changed, the baton has been passed and now a passionate culinary team with equally passionate bartenders have come together to bring small plates, spot on cocktails, great wines and select beers to Adams Morgan”

“Heres a photo of the smoke coming out of the roof of Perry’s/mintwood right after the fire started, before fire department/police response.”

Chad reports at 11:45am:

“It’s a major fire. Smoke was just pouring out. All the streets were hazy. Looked like all the kitchen staff stayed up there trying to put it out. They finally had to run out.”

Liz reported:

“Perry’s is apparently on fire again, and this time I definitely see/smell smoke and hear the fire alarms going off inside. At least 6 trucks with more arriving. Seems to be under control though.

Update, firefighters are going in and out of Mintwood, too, and smoke is coming out of the doors there. Looked like they were getting hoses ready. This seems to be a bigger deal than the last incident, but no visible flames.

Columbia Rd is blocked off at Mintwood up to 18th, and the end of Biltmore at Columbia is blocked with parked fire trucks. The 42 bus is offloading at Belmont and just stopping for now.”

From the Mayor’s office:

“FEMS responded to a fire at Mintwood Place and Perrys this morning at approximately 11:00am. The fire did not spread beyond the building, but we spoke with John and Sayid and, as of right now, they are anticipating keeping the restaurants closed for a couple days.

We will work with FEMS, the businesses affected and the Adams Morgan Community as we respond together to this incident.”
