From an email:

“With no end in sight to the government shutdown, wanted to pass along what Whole Foods Market is planning to do to help in the community. Because federal workers are not just customers – they‘re neighbors, partners, family and friends.

Local Whole Foods Markets are offering up their stores to the community. Furloughed or not – need a place to spend extra time? Gather with friends? Doors are open with even more free samples, Wi-Fi and seats.

And on Sunday, everyone is invited to a FREE family dinner. From 5:30-7pm stop by Whole Foods Markets in D.C., Virginia or Maryland for a spaghetti dinner on us.

In the meantime, we’ll have more events to help fill free time – including Furlough Friday samples at Georgetown and a rooftop yoga class at our P St. store on Saturday.

Whole Foods Market is also encouraging people to get out and enjoy other local businesses that could use some support.

What: A Shutdown Pick-Me-Up — Get together with neighbors at a FREE Spaghetti Dinner
Where: Whole Foods Market stores in D.C., Virginia and Maryland
When: Sunday, October 6, 5:30-7 pm
Who: Everyone.
Why: We love our neighbors.”

Awesome to see the new Safeway start to rise on Georgia Ave. Soon it’ll be:

“Once completed, the new 62,000 square-foot facility will be the third largest Safeway in the city and replace the current store, which was built in 1963 and measures 21,250 square feet. The project will feature a full-service Safeway at street level with below grade parking on the first level solely for Safeway shoppers and the second level dedicated exclusively for the building’s residents.”

“Dear PoPville,

What are folks thinking about Each Peach Market in Mount Pleasant? I *want* to like it; I really do. We live nearby and were delighted when we heard it was coming. However, I’ve now been in three times and only once have been tempted to buy anything. (Blackberries, which at $4/half pint were not cheap, and turned out to be tasteless and lower quality than I get at the Columbia Heights Giant). The other times I’ve been in I’ve been struck by how sparse the place looks. Any new devotees out there? Recommendations for products they carry? How are their sandwiches? Made- in-house products? I want to support a new neighborhood business, but so far have been kind of underwhelmed.”

“Dear PoPville,

I know you guys wrote about the problems with the Tivoli Square Giant – but I’m unhappy to report that they are back again. So far this week they are installing a new checkout system, that will become standard at all Giant’s. This system, which is designed for smaller receipts to be printed, was called “slower” by the 2 cashiers i’ve visited this week, and clearly has a great number of flaws as well. Most importantly, Giant either no longer accepts phone numbers as a replacement for physical bonus cards, (as one cashier told me) or is forcing everybody to re-register their numbers as myself, and the 5 people in line with me all were told by the cashier that the system “didn’t recognize the number” which mean we didn’t have numbers because the new system was fool-proof.

All in all, my last two trips to Giant have featured 45 minute waits at the checkout and non functioning, “new and improved systems”

I don’t understand why, after fighting so hard to regain the trust of the community, Giant is letting Trivoli be the guinea pig for a system that clearly isn’t ready for prime time. Do you have any more information on what the changes are and why?”

Brookland is blowing up. There really is no debate anymore – it is. I’ve heard tons of scuttlebutt over the past few months and many from folks in the know with a high degree of certainty. One of the most exciting is that Whole Foods is apparently pretty much a done deal. If half of the scuttlebutt I’ve heard is true, I’d expect many more (big and small) announcements about Brookland in the near future too…

“New grocery store with organic and locally grown produce, meats, nutritious foods, and eco household products. Their food court will serve as a bakery, deli and sushi bar. 25% or less Alcohol Sales.”

Hours will be Sunday through Saturday 8:00 am – 10:00 pm. More info as it becomes available.
