“First Trader Joe’s Capitol Hill to Welcome Customers With Warm, Lively Grand Opening
Weekend-long event to include live music, giveaways, tastings and ceremonial lei cutting

The first Trader Joe’s in the Capitol Hill neighborhood will open its doors next Friday. The new location will be the third Trader Joe’s store in the Washington, DC area and the first outside of Northwest DC. The new, nearly 13,000 square foot store will feature underground parking and murals that pay tribute to nearby landmarks including the Capitol Building, Barracks Row and Eastern Market. Store Captain Tom Senior, an 11year veteran of the company, and recently hired Crew Members invite customers and the media to attend the Grand Opening ceremony to tour the new location and help celebrate the much-anticipated event.

A liquor license placard has been posted at the 17th Street Safeway in Dupont:

“New Class “B” full-service grocery store selling beer and wine.”

And this email from an ANC Commissioner on the Dupont listserv has been causing me incredible agita. Please join me in this discomfort:

“Safeway is undergoing a badly needed renovation and has applied to the DC government for a permit to sell beer and wine. I have been talking to neighbors and many oppose the sale of beer and wine at Safeway.

The main concern is that the store is small and beer and wine will take space otherwise available for groceries. They have found 80 linear feet for beer and wine.

Neighbors want to preserve the 17th St. village and are supportive of the family businesses who run local liquor outlets. We already have plenty of options for beer and wine.

Parents occasionally send their children to buy groceries at this store and they don’t want to expose them to an environment where alcohol is being sold.

The ANC meets next Wednesday [Ed. Note: tomorrow] to consider this issue. (7 pm, 1775 Mass. Ave.) It can support or oppose Safeway’s proposal and its views must be given ‘great weight’ by ABRA. They also have a leading role in negotiating any settlement agreement with Safeway so it’s important that they hear residents’ views. A big turnout at the Wednesday meeting would be great.”

If you will it is no dream Vol. 820. Following a week we willed a Wawa and an indoor competitive Axe Throwing option to the District, I was sure we’d be talking about dog poop and doors this week. Boy was I wrong. (Well the week is young…) But last night around 10pm, while I was too engrossed in Netflix’s Who Murdered Sister Cathy? to post, WDCEP (Washington DC Economic Partnership) tweeted us:

“It’s true! @Wegmans is coming to #DC.”

“Old Fannie Mae HQ!!”

This confirms our first report of a Wegmans possibly coming to the future, former Fannie Mae site back in March.

The Washington Post reports:

“Fannie Mae is scheduled to move out of the complex late next year, clearing the way for Wegmans to open by 2022, according to Richard Lake, founding partner of Roadside Development. The grocery store, which is expected to take up about 80,000 square feet, will be located on the lower level, with an entrance at the back of the building, Lake said.”

And there was great joy in PoPville. STAY TUNED.

The Glover House is located on Wisconsin Avenue in the heart of Glover Park, a short walk from Georgetown for entertainment and an easy connection to the Rock Creek Park trail system for recreation. With carefully planned amenities designed to enhance everyday experiences, TGH is a home for those who live, not settle.”

No official mention of the Trader Joe’s yet. (more…)

There was a lot of speculation after Wegmans “looked doubtful” and when we last spoke about the massive Walter Reed development a few weeks ago. Well here we have it according to the new DC Neighborhood Profiles report from the Washington DC Economic Partnership (WDCEP):

Update: Thanks to all who sent this link from WBJ:

“The District-based Douglas has filed plans with the D.C. Zoning Commission to construct a mixed-use building on a 2-acre site bounded by Eastern Avenue, Georgia Avenue, Alaska Avenue and Kalmia Road NW in Shepherd Park. The project will include 199 multifamily units over 56,079 square feet of retail, anchored by a new Harris Teeter supermarket, and 271 underground parking spaces.”

Coming to McMillan too – but we knew that.

Also of note – DC’s daytime population is 1,145,482 – I’ve always wondered that!

Anyway, you can read the full report here.
