“Students going back to school often look forward to the chance to pick out new school clothes and new favorite pens, notebooks, backpacks and other school supplies. However, that rush of back to school shopping is a luxury some cannot afford.

Two students with big hearts took this into consideration and sprung into action to help their community be prepared for the upcoming school year. Taylor J and Trinity B created a Back 2 School Supply Drive for children in need. People can donate packs of pens, pencils, binders, notebooks and other new to gentle used school items now through August 12th, 2017 at Starrs Second Story Boutique (3903 Georgia Ave NW). A Facebook group has been set up to track progress and help organize other donations and efforts as needed.

And BKK Cookshop on NY Ave is donating 10% of their proceeds next Tuesday, July 25 to help those displaced as well.”

A local elementary school student drowned while at the pool with her family last Saturday, and the family is seeking funds for counseling (presumably for the three other children in the family) and her memorial. On Saturday, July 1, J’da Symone Gadson, 7 year old student at West Education Campus died in a pool accident while with her family. J’da was one of the sweetest children in our second grade class. She loved to learn and was a tremendously hard worker. J’da had her own sense of style and came to school each day with a bright smile. She will be truly missed by her classmates, teachers and West family. Mother Shawnice Winslow and her three children are having a difficult time coping with the loss. The school community would like to support through helping with counseling services, memorial costs and additional family expenses.

“Wiggin Out for Sickle Cell Fundraiser at the Dirty Goose” Next Thursday

“It’s time to dust off the wigs and turn out for a good cause. Thursday, July 13th from 5 to 8 pm, Sick Cells and The Dirty Goose will be hosting a fundraiser and awareness event for sickle cell disease (SCD). The event, taking place at 913 U Street NW, will include a fashion show by fashion designer, wig enthusiast, and an adult living with SCD, Tristan Lee. There will appearances by DC Drag Queen, Miss Labella Mafia, and local chef and foodie Renny Vonne. The event will also include have a raffle (see some of the prizes below).

Tristan is a model, actor, poet, and fashion designer. He was diagnosed with SCD at six months old and suffered a stroke when he was 9. He made an 80% recovery but used the stroke as an inspiration to start acting. In his words, “if people were going to look at me, I might as well give them something to look at.”

Tristan’s fashion line, Divo Star, is designed to raise awareness about SCD. During the event, Tristan will present 10 gender neutral looks from his collection. His pieces include summer denim rompers and overalls worn by men and women. We’ll also have a Q&A session, lead by Morenike Ayo-Vonne, to Tristan about his life with SCD.

Fundraiser for Capital City Public Charter School Families Displaced by Huge Fire Saturday Morning

I am a teacher at Capital City Public Charter School. Four of our families were displaced by the apartment fire this weekend at 13th and Peabody and literally escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs. I started a gofundme to help with the many expenses they will be facing. Please donate if you can!

Three families from Capital City Public Charter School were affected by an apartment fire at 13th and Peabody St. early on June 24th. The fire started before dawn and residents escaped through smoke-filled hallways and down ladders with nothing but the clothes on their backs.“

“DC-based members of the offbeat feminist humor site, The Toast, are holding a bake sale from 10 am until 1 pm on Saturday, June 24 at Brookland’s Monroe Street Farmers Market located at 716 Monroe Street NE (right behind the Brookland Metro Station). All funds raised at the sale will benefit DC Books to Prisons. This is the third sale to be held by DC toasties. The first two sales, held in late 2016, raised enough money to cover two weeks worth of book shipping costs, the organization’s main expense. (more…)
