All funds raised at the sale will benefit DC Books to Prisons. This is the third sale to be held by DC toasties. “Dear PoPville,

A friend of mine, Petworth resident, and solidarity activist, Sarah Brammer-Shlay had her arm badly broken in Israel by police during a nonviolent movement action.

She’s raised enough funds for surgery (thankfully) but needs further funding for recuperation. If you could please share her story and her generosity.org link it would be much appreciated. She is truly an amazing person with an amazing heart who just wants to better the world and give those in need a voice.”

Ed. Note: Give or don’t give but comments are closed for this one – I don’t have enough beer in the fridge to get me through a Middle East peace debate. Thanks for understanding.

From an email:

“On Thursday, June 1 from 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m., Chipotle Mexican Grill will host a fundraiser across all D.C. Chipotle locations to support the D.C. Public Library Foundation. When customers dine at any of these locations and mention the fundraiser at the register, Chipotle will donate 50 percent of the proceeds to the D.C. Public Library summer reading program.

For the fourth year, Chipotle is looking forward to partnering with the D.C. Public Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization that enhances DC Public Library resources and programs to promote literacy and a thirst for knowledge.”

“Dear PoPville,

Zaan Scott is the swim instructor at Rumsey Pool. He’s such a great guy and always full of smiles, and this is just devastating. Please share the link to his GoFundMe!”

On April 9th, on his way home after work in SE, he was approached by an armed assailant looking to rob him. A second assailant appeared out of the shadows and shot him in the back. Although the assailants did not take any of his material belongings before running away, they stole his health, independence, sense of safety and livelihood in that one moment when they fired the gun. Police are still looking for the gunmen.

The bullet shattered Zaan’s sixth vertebrae and severed half of his spinal cord. He is currently paralyzed from the waist down and is living in rehab until he is self sufficient again. He attends physical and occupational therapy three hours each day to rehabilitate his spinal cord injury and goes into each session challenging himself to work even harder than the last session. He is desperately clinging to the hope that he will walk again soon and hopes to be back in the pool as soon as possible. Although Zaan is strong and faithful, it will not be an easy road to recovery!

Zaan is in need of financial assistance to get him through this time of need, and he believes in the kindness of strangers, friends and his community.

We are hoping to raise money through this fund to cover the following: (more…)

From owner Nic Makris:

“With the support of DCBrau the Blaguard (2003 18th Street, NW in Adams Morgan) and Homestead (3911 Georgia Avenue, NW in Petworth) are donating $2 of every DCBrau pint sold to Race for Hope, a charity 5k here in DC to help fund brain tumor research.

Last year, only a few days prior to Homestead opening, the mother of Nic Makris (owner of The Blaguard and Homestead), passed away following a valiant 11-year fight with brain cancer. The months leading up to her passing, and months following, were incredibly difficult for Nic and his family, but their family is not alone. Everyone has been affected by cancer whether as a patient, family member or friend. We have the opportunity to fight back against this disease and Nic and his family have invited the public to come and support them in our fight against cancer!
The week-long fundraiser at the Blaguard and Homestead runs May 1st-May 6th. With the purchase of any DCBrau $2 gets donated to their Race for Hope team, Chris’s Cronies, in honor of Nic’s mother, Christine Makris. There will also be a fundraising event and DCBrau Collaboration tap takeover on May 6th, 2017 from 2-7pm at the Blaguard, and there will be a TON of raffle prizes, including gift cards, Nats/O’s tickets, sports memorabilia, a “Friday Night on the River” package, a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, Port City Brewery tour for 12 and more! If you can’t make it by for a pint or to the fundraiser, but you’re still interested in supporting the event, please consider joining Chris’ Cronies and walking/running in the Race for Hope (May 7th) at Freedom Plaza. To join the team, or make a donation directly to their team, please visit www.braintumorcommunity.org/goto/chriscronies2017.
