eastern band

“Dear PoPville,

While at the Georgetown men’s basketball game on Saturday, the Eastern High School marching band played at halftime and they mentioned they are raising funds to take a trip to New Orleans in April to play and visit Southern University, so band members can talk to the band director about possible scholarships. The Go Fund Me page is below:

eastern2neworleans The Blue and White Marching Machine is excited about the opportunity to travel to Louisiana. This will be the first time our band will be showcased in that region in over 20 years! We will be traveling to New Orleans April 28th-May 1st. As you know, it can be costly to move a large organization, so we need your help. All donations will be greatly appreciated as we embark on this adventure for our students. They will learn about the rich history of New Orleans, additionally, visit and tour prestigious HBCU “Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While on campus, students will meet with the director of bands and university administrators to discuss scholarship opportunities.

Thank you for your continued support

Help spread the word!

BMPV

“Dear PoPville,

Two families with children enrolled in a local elementary school, Bruce Monroe Elementary at Park View (BMPV), are currently facing deportation proceedings and are approaching the community for help.

A fund has been established to support the families so they can retain an attorney.

We’re urging neighbors to please consider donating! Any money not spent providing legal assistance to BMPV families will be donated to the CAIR coalition and CARECEN in equal parts.”

“Dear PoPville,

I just ran into a former employee in front of the Juice Joint and he told me what had happened.”

“Hi friends!! I’m reaching out for your support.

As many of you may know, I closed my business, Juice Joint Cafe, this past October after 21 years in business. Unfortunately, between declining sales and my health issues, I was unable to sustain the business, which leads me to why I need your support now.

In early March, 2016 i noticed a small lump in my neck. Not having the insurance, time and money to properly evaluate my condition, I just ignored it. (more…)

It’s that time of year again – I don’t like to bother you guys with my personal projects but this is an important one and it’s a fight I’m sure you can again get behind. I have an ambitious total of $1500 that I’d like to raise this year so any little bit you can give will help get to that goal. If you’re able please give whatever you can and like previous years – anyone who gives $10 or more will get a free PoPville shirt that you can pick up at the shaving event. It’s at Boundary Stone again (116 Rhode Island Ave NW) March 12th at 3pm. You can donate to my page here and I’ll bring a bunch of shirts (both old and new) for those who gave. Thanks for your generosity it means a lot to me and it means the world to the children you’ll be helping out.

Pinkie recovering via gofundme

Thanks to a reader for passing on this fundraising page for Pinkie’s Medical Expenses:

“On January 25, 2017 the 60 year old owner of Jam Doung Style Jamaican Cuisine Restaurant was shot four times after closing up for the night.

After a very long day of work—7am to 9:30pm— Jam Doung’s owner, affectionately known as Pinkie by family and friends, and two of her employees began walking to their cars, making jokes and laughing, which is common for the group. They then noticed a masked man approaching them. The masked man focused all of his attention on Pinkie, pointing the gun in her face and commanding her to give him her purse.

What happened next did not shock anyone other than the gunman and his accomplice that was standing as look out. Pinkie freed her hands of the food she was carrying home, and then grabbed the muzzle of the gun that was being pointed at her. Pinkie and the gunman struggled with the gun for what seemed like forever. Then the gunman shot Pinkie in her right wrist. But Pinkie continued to fight until she was able to pull the mask off of her attacker. Pinkie was, however, shocked to realize that her attacker was someone that she knew. (more…)

Metro-cards
via Miriam’s Kitchen: “We received 970 Metro cards after the Inauguration and the Women’s March. One of them is helping Tesfay get to his next doctor’s appointment.”

Thanks to Ashley Lusk (who’s original tweet mentioning the idea went viral) for the update from Miriam’s Kitchen:

“After the Inauguration and the Women’s March, we asked people to donate unneeded Metro cards to us so that we could help guests get to critical appointments. We were absolutely amazed by the response. You helped share the post so that it reached more than 795,000 people. To date, we have received 970 Metro cards from as far away as Hawaii, California, Montana, Oregon, and Texas. Additionally, many donors included warm messages of hope as well as additional support.

We have been so touched by the sense of community and good will that people across the nation have shown to our guests and our efforts to end long-term homelessness in our nation’s capital. Tesfay Yegzaw is an MK guest who recently lost his job and has limited funds. Your kindness has helped him get to his next doctor’s appointment. Thank you so much.”

I may have overestimated a bit but this is simply awesome. If you would like to donate to Miriam’s Kitchen you can always do so here.
