“Dear PoPville,

As the holiday season is quickly approaching and, unfortunately, COVID-19 cases are once again surging, I was wondering how I could support our amazing local healthcare workers and first responders during such a difficult time. Back in March and April there were various GoFundMes or restaurant partnerships to help donate meals to hospital divisions, etc – is there anything like that going on now? A lot of the links I found through researching had expired. Advice on how we can help make the next two months easier on them would be greatly appreciated.”

Thanks to all who passed on the GoFundMe for Sakina Halal Grill:

Kazi Manan introduced a new model of empathy and kindness in America when he opened his restaurant to every person who needs a refuge from their daily hunger. He has never differentiated between a paying or non-paying customer as he is constantly aware of his journey to success – and the difficulties along the way. Sakina Halal Grill has proudly served meals to the homeless independently and unsupported by any donations from patrons. He has always refused the offers as Sakina Halal Grill has been able to sustain this mission with its own funds and the prayers of the community. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve created a Go Fund me campaign for the six long-time staffers summarily dismissed without severance late last month when Cathedral Care Pharmacy finally closed its doors after 96 years of service to the communities of Woodley, Cleveland and North Cleveland Park.

Now, with the holidays approaching, the displaced staffers face mounting medical, housing, food and utility bills they cannot afford to pay unless they very quickly find jobs in the worst of all times to be looking for them.”

From El Techo (606 Florida Avenue, NW):

“Beginning tomorrow, El Techo is partnering with a local restaurant and a mutual aid group in Honduras to raise funds and collect critical supplies for communities affected by Hurricane Eta. From November 14-28, one dollar from every cucumber mojito sold at the rooftop restaurant will be donated to assist in purchasing much-needed items. In addition, guests will receive $1 off a drink in exchange for a donation of a piece of clothing, pair of shoes or other necessities such as towels or blankets to be sent directly to the mutual aid organization in Honduras. From GoFundMe:

“Nikki is not one to ask for help, she didn’t ask me to set this up. I WANTED to do it so she wouldn’t have to worry… And be able to recover with some peace of mind.

Last night (11/09/20) she was injured in a drive by shooting on her block. She was standing with her husband Andrew, their dog Ruby and a neighbor friend. They were discussing how in the recent weeks they have been noticing how the neighborhood was starting to get a little worse with the gunfire. As they were standing there, they heard lots of loud popping, they all fell to the ground and as Andrew looked up he saw a guy out the window of a car with a gun. (more…)

Thanks to Daria for sharing the fundraiser:

“Several of my dear friends including and their 4 year old daughter, as well as our amazing friend Tony have been displaced by the large fire that took place early on Friday morning at 1st Pl NE. Giselle, who is an incredible friend and pediatric PT (and known as Gafanhota to her capoeira community), had to jump from a 3rd story window and suffered a broken pelvis, vertebrae, and arm. Both the Green family and Tony have been displaced by this event and are without the vast majority of their belongings due to smoke damage. We’re raising money to help them out as many expenses as possible over the coming months.” (more…)

“Foster pup, Bullet, helping stock the Free Food Pantry at Bluebird Sky Yoga Studio in Brookland NE.”

Thanks to Ashley for passing on this GoFundMe:

“My goal is to keep the Free Food Pantry stocked for one full year.

Hello! My name is Tri and when the pandemic forced my small business Hot Pink Photo Booth to temporary close, I decided to use my time and resources to try and help my local community!

It all started with a coat drive. My goal was to help ONE person who needed a coat, get a coat and stay a little warmer this winter. (more…)

Thanks to Nicole for passing on this GoFundMe:

“I met Barbara M. at my Free Food Pantry in Brookland NE, Washington, DC.

She was so over joyed to find that there’s a Free Food Pantry in her neighborhood that she started to tear up. I told her she can help her self and take whatever she needs.

She broke down and told me her story. I asked for her permission to do a recording so I can share and see if we can come together as a community to help Barbara from becoming homeless. (more…)

From a press release:

“On November 3, 2020, Election Day, Bartenders Against Racism (BAR) will provide water and other supplies to people waiting in line to vote as part of their #HYDRATETHEVOTE initiative. Expecting record numbers of people at the polls, BAR is building on its successful “supplytending” program that provided necessities for peaceful protestors at most DC-based demonstrations this past summer. The organization is calling for volunteers to give out supplies at polling stations and for donations to support efforts.

“This may be the most important election in our lifetimes – especially for people of color like me. And we believe that everyone should be able to exercise their right to vote,” said Allison Lane, president of Bartenders Against Racism. “We should celebrate voting, not suffer through it. We’ve got voter’s backs this year.”

BAR is calling on everyone to help by volunteering to “adopt” a polling location in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Montgomery and Prince Geroge’s counties to distribute water, snacks and other supplies to voters waiting in line. (more…)
