Big development new from the Georgetown BID:

“Robert Bell of Georgetown-based Robert Bell Associates announced that plans have been finalized to develop the former Georgetown Theater, at Wisconsin Avenue and O Street. The property will offer office, retail, and residential space; Bell’s plans for a thoughtful redevelopment include restoring the building’s iconic theater marquee.”

This would be awesome. The building hoped for Half Street Market is located at 49 L Street, SE near Nats Park. Their website says:

“The Half Street Market is a re-use concept for an existing GSA property in Southeast, Washington, DC that will provide the neighborhood and city with a public venue for a food market, restaurant, and flexible community space.”

I just noticed the rendering posted out front of the Burma restaurant that closed at the end of 2013. Here’s a clearer shot from their website:

Douglas’ website says:

“Douglas Development acquired both 736 and 740 6th Street in 2013. The redevelopment plan for the properties is to combine the two buildings into one modern office building with street level retail. Plans for the redevelopment include adding a modern brick and glass facade to the exterior of the structure, gutting and remodeling the interior and increasing both structures to be a total of four stories.

This new property is in the initial planning stage. Plans for the property will evolve through the planning and permitting stages.

linens of the week

Thanks to all who sent word and copies of the flyer above:

“Just wanted to let you know that I got a flyer in my mailbox from the Holladay Corporation with a rendering of their plans for the build out of Linens of the Week. The community meeting is at the Park Road substation on August 13th at 7 PM.

Big news for the denizens of Lamont Street.

I always new it would happen and when I first moved in 5 years ago I hated the factory. But I have to say it has really grown on me over the years. They always stopped working at a reasonable hour, it kept parking available and when Alsco took over they really worked on the trash problem. Once I realized it wasn’t “horrible” I kinda started to think it was cool to live near where people actually physically produced something. Some of my old neighbors from Park Road would work there and we would say hi.

The place DID catch fire once a month though, like clockwork.”

Anyone hear early details of the plans? Could be hugely transformative.

“Dear Popville,

A developer with a sketchy track record on Capitol Hill plans to build an 18-unit/5-story condo building on a lot occupied by a single family row-house near us. It’s zoned C-2-A so if they adhere to code, I believe it’s permissible.

But neighbors found that the developer submitted plans designed by an unlicensed individual claiming specifically to be an architect. The professional engineer who stamped the architect’s plans is operating on a license revoked in another state…for repeatedly stamping his seal on plans he didn’t oversee.

Is this a crime? Does DC or DCRA ever penalize developers who submit plans with these types of violations, if so, how?”

Urban Land Company reports:

“Part of the development team responsible for Union Market’s development has purchased the existing Burger King site at 320 Florida Avenue, NE. It’s too early to have exact details on what the plans are for the site, but it is adjacent to the parcel purchased by LCOR, Inc. that is planned for 188 apartment units.”

And in other Burger King news – the one at 501 G Street, NW in Chinatown has also closed:

North Twin Oaks Plot at 14th and Taylor St, NW

From an email:

“As many of you know, the north side of Twin Oaks Community Garden—which is located on either side of Taylor St NW at 14th St–has been slated for demolition to make way for a parking lot as part of the renovation of the neighboring Powell Elementary School.

We are writing to inform you that, after receiving suggestions on alternative parking options from Twin Oaks as well as comments from the community, the D.C. Department of General Services (DGS) has decided to proceed with the destruction of the north side of the garden. There will be a community meeting this Tuesday to announce the decision as well as plans to build a new garden in Upshur park, and we invite all community members to attend to weigh in.

Where: Petworth Library, 4200 Kansas Ave NW
When: Tuesday, August 5th, 6:30pm

Thank you for your support,
Twin Oaks Community Garden”

Thanks to all who sent emails about Popeyes closing. We knew it was coming when we saw La Villa closed next door in early June. Fear not Popeyes fans – they’ll reopen in 2-3 months across the street at 1322 14th St, NW (between B Too and The Pig.)
