“Dear PoPville,

Came across this sign on a house on 13th St near Spring as I was walking back to my house in Petworth yesterday. Any info on this? I have a friend who lives further up the street and similarly dealt with developers harassing him and his roommates a few years ago for complaining to the city about their building practices, so not terribly surprised if this was also true.”

Ed. Note: Another reader sent a photo of the sign on the right hand side of the photo above a few weeks ago. I hadn’t seen the one on the left, which is also intriguing.

“Great news on the Columbia Heights dog park. I got this letter from @wmata yesterday evening. Thanks to our efforts, they decided to pull it off the market and will negotiate with the District to purchase the property. @11thandBark #SaveTheDogPark”

From the letter:

“That process requires WMATA to sell property for ‘fair market value’, which is equal to $2,150,000 for the 1100 Park Road, NW property.”

Adams Morgan’s Line Hotel $46 Million Tax Abatement Appears in Jeopardy after AG Ruling unless “specific D.C. hiring requirements” met

“In response to a request from two D.C. Council members, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine has issued a legal opinion concluding that the Bowser Administration does not have authority to waive specific D.C. hiring requirements put in law in order for the Line Hotel to qualify for a taxpayer subsidy worth up to $46 million. Earlier this month, the Department of Employment Services (DOES) found that the hotel had not met two of seven specific requirements legislated by the Council but said the agency had the ability to create an alternative compliance plan.

“The Adams Morgan Hotel Real Property Tax Abatement Act of 2010 (“Abatement Act”) grants the Line Hotel a tax abatement if the Hotel meets seven statutory conditions. You asked whether the Department of Employment Services (“DOES”) may waive those conditions. We conclude that it may not,” Racine wrote. (more…)

Lidl Grocery coming to the Skyland Town Center in Ward 7’s Hillcrest

“At RECon, the annual meeting of the International Council of Shopping Centers, Mayor Muriel Bowser, Rappaport Development, and WC Smith announced plans for Lidl US to open its first store in Washington, DC at Skyland Town Center, an 18-acre site located in Ward 7 at the intersection of Good Hope Road, Naylor Road, and Alabama Avenue SE. In January, the Mayor broke ground on Good Food Markets in the Bellevue community in Ward 8, making Lidl the second major announcement about bringing a new grocery store East of the River in the first six months of the Mayor’s second term.

“Lidl is a fantastic grocery store – a grocery store that we are proud to be bringing to the residents of Ward 7,” said Mayor Bowser. “Lidl knows what we know: Every corner of Washington, DC is a great place to do business. As we continue working to make our city’s prosperity more inclusive, this partnership is a reflection of the work we are doing to bring high-quality resources and amenities to every part of our city – amenities that will set our families and neighborhoods up for long-term success.”

The Skyland Development Team secured the lease with Lidl US, a grocer that operates more than 65 stores across nine East Coast states. Joining CVS and other restaurant and service uses, Lidl will occupy 29,089 square feet within the Skyland development. The store will be the first internationally recognized full-service supermarket to enter Wards 7 and 8 since 2007. (more…)

The Georgetown landmark, a readapted 30,000 square foot building, will serve as a significant milestone in Georgetown’s leadership in retail activity as it converts the two-tenant ground-floor retail building into six high demand, small-format retail spaces, returning the spaces back to their original layout.
