Hoping that the PoPville community can weigh in to help us figure out what’s happening with an empty lot behind our place. Between Chapin and Belmont off 14th St there’s a lot that has been overgrown (to the point where it caught fire on the 4th of July two years ago from some kids shooting fireworks into the brush) and unoccupied for the better part of three years, with three shipping containers as its only occupants (plus about a thousand rats). “Mayor Muriel Bowser, Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, and Interim Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development John J. Falcicchio broke ground on Phase I of Bryant Street, a 13-acre mixed-use development that will deliver 487 apartment units, a nine-screen cinema, and 35,000 square feet of retail to Ward 5. The District provided a Tax-Increment Financing (TIF) agreement for the first phase of the development, which is expected to generate about $4 million in annual tax revenue. (more…)

“For more than two years, appeals have kept the planned-unit development (PUD) in limbo. However last week, the DC Court of Appeals, in its final decision on the PUD, affirmed that while the original PUD order offered insufficient justification for several provisions of the development, the response that the Zoning Commission issued on remand adequately addressed any outstanding concerns.

Between this decision and the time extension granted earlier this year, the development team has until March 2021 to apply for building permits.“

Show of Hands Cocktail Bar coming to “The Roost” in Hill East this Fall

“Signs now up for The Roost and Show of Hands at the Blackbird construction site!”

Washington CityPaper reported:

“Nick Farrell will lead the first bar to take shape in the 12,500-square-foot space, Show of Hands. You’ve tasted his cocktails at Iron Gate and Hazel.

Within The Roost, NRG will compliment Show of Hands with a beer bar from Greg Engert, plus a host of eateries.”

There used to be a gas station in the slice of land in Eastern Georgetown bounded by 28th, M, and Pennsylvania. The gas station was torn down a couple of years ago, and now it’s just an empty lot with this window standing alone. Does anyone know what’s going on here?”
