“Dear PoPville,

I was looking at floor plans for The Shay and noticed so many of the layouts don’t have any windows in the bedrooms. (Including the corner apartment with 2 full balconies for a whopping $3,116 a month). Besides being an absurd amount of money for a windowless bedroom, aren’t these technically illegal? My understanding from living in NYC that in order to qualify as a bedroom, it must have two means for egress. NYC at least had the decently to paint things as a “home office” to appease the housing department. Wondering how the law shakes out in DC.”

“Dear PoPville,

We’re getting married in VA and want to use a friend to marry us; she is not ordained and we were originally thinking to take the approach of the online ordination. That seems to be clearly prohibited by VA due to recent court decisions in the last 5 years. So our question is just ot see if anyone has any luck figuring this out so that a friend could facilitate the ceremony.”

“Dear PoPville,

Anybody in Petworth switch to RCN last summer, with the promise of a $150 Visa gift card, and never received it? I have had all kinds of issues with them, and just wondering if anybody had the same experience”

“Dear PoPville,

My apartment complex is staunchly refusing to provide me with an extra key fob, for any price. They gave me a spare key to my door however, so this policy is a bit confusing (I can’t get to my door without being able to get into the building, duh). According to my management company, were I locked out and there no security person present, which is every night after 8pm, I would have to call an emergency management number to get in the building for a fee of $40. So that means I’m standing alone, at night, in who knows what weather hoping the maintenance guy answers and comes to get me. Ridiculous.

After a great deal of frustrating back and forth, I’ve decided my only real solution is to clone my key fob. I’ve seen mail-away services that do this, but since I only have one fob I can’t afford to send it out to be cloned. Does anyone know of a reliable fob cloner in the DC metro area I could use to solve this problem??”

rumpshaker

“Dear PoPville,

On Wednesday afternoon, two youths tried to steal one of my scooters (as seen on sweet city ride: the rumpshaker). I was coming out of the bathroom when I heard a small crash outside, and would have thought nothing about it except for that a friend had pointed out two suspicious looking kids pointing at the front of our house earlier in the day. I wasn’t there, so I cannot attest to whether the kids were suspicious looking or just pointing very suspiciously. When I ran to my bedroom window, I saw two teens pushing the scooter out of my back gate. I found them in the alley attempting to hotwire? the rumpshaker; however, all they did was figure out how to open the front storage area. Having just underwear and wool socks on, I gave them a good scare (as the sight of me in my underwear would), knocking one of the kids to the ground and doing my best to come up with curse words. They ran down the alley and I wheeled the scooter back inside and called the police who said they would “canvas the area.” (more…)

OTR RFAI

“Dear PoPville,

Since I was stuck indoors for most of Snowzilla I decided to go ahead and do my taxes. I filed my DC tax return electronically as I’ve done in past years, however I received a letter from the DC Office of Tax and Revenue Refund Response Unit yesterday asking for a LOT of information in order to verify my identity. I assume this is part of OTR’s attempted to cut down on fraud/identity theft, but I wanted to see if anyone else has received a similar letter?”

“Dear PoPville,

I had an interesting interaction at Atlantic Cinema Theater tonight. I was going to see the 730 show of Hail Caesar. When I drove up to the theater the entire parking lane in front of the cinema had construction cones on the curb and emergency no parking signs on the street lights. I pulled out in front of one of the lights to read the restrictions since I assumed it was a daytime no parking order for a moving truck. I was shocked to see it was for a moving truck from 4:00 pm-11:00 pm. While I was looking at the sign a guy in a valet uniform from mj parking became up and asked me what I was doing. (more…)

drugs

“Dear PoPville,

These foil packets of powder have been in the yard of a building in Mount Pleasant for months. What are they? Why hasn’t anyone come back for them?”

Anyone know the shelf life of cocaine these days. Maybe the owner lost them/gave up on them during/after the blizzard?

metro retail

“Dear PoPville,

Random question that I couldn’t answer via Google: Do you know why there are no retail outlets in DC metro stations? For a system that seems to be underfunded and in need of upgraded cars and greater police presence, among other things, it would seem like leasing retail space could provide a least a secondary source of income. This technique is employed to a great degree in Europe, where even small-town train stations resemble shopping malls.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am writing to see if your readers could provide recommendations for a contractor who specializes in pocket door repairs. I live in a historic building in D.C. and one of the two large pocket doors separating my bedroom and living room has been stuck for some time. Ideally, I’m looking for someone who has experience working in older/historic buildings.”
