“Dear PoPville,

I’m hosting a group of my friends in DC for 4th of July weekend and am wondering what I should include on the itinerary. It will be about 10 of us total, most of whom have never spent time in DC before. They’ll be here from Friday until Tuesday so I’m trying to figure out what to plan for such a large group other than a lot of eating and drinking along with some of the Smithsonians. Any and all recommendations would be appreciated!!”

“Dear PoPville,

I assume this is MPD activity, but a couple of helicopters have been circling Adams Morgan most of the morning. Is a criminal on on the loose? I feel like I’m living in a war zone.”

Nowadays I just assume daytime copters are just part of the seemingly general increase we’ve been hearing the last few months. Anyone happen to know more about anything going on in Adams Morgan this morning?

“Dear PoPville,

I have a flat, white roof with no tree cover. It is routinely flown over by the presidential helicopters carrying the President as well as other VIPs. And news helicopters. And police helicopters. It would make a great spot to make my feelings known about policy to some pretty important people. Is there any rule in DC against painting messages on rooftops that are visible only to aircraft and satellites? If someone wanted me to paint a message for their organization and I accepted money to compensate me for the expense of cleaning off their message when done, would that be an issue? I suppose I would have to get a permit from DCRA for something…but I’m not sure what. It would be great to earn some money doing this, but I’d be willing to do it for free too.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping someone out there can help us with this confusing issue we’ve been having with our trash cans. We received this violation in the mail today, and can’t make sense of it. Looking for clarification as to what was actually violated. If you read the code, rule 705.5 on waste regulation it doesn’t specify where trashcans may be left, only the appropriate times to have them out on the street. Also, what is the significance of the Respondent being military? My husband is military so this seems odd and important? The paragraph above the Inspector/Investigator’s signature asks to check off one of several options regarding the “Respondent” being military. The following option was checked “I am unable to determine whether the Respondent is in the military service of the United States”. Just confused why a citation about trash bins would involve military service.

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to share and give a heads up to your readers about something that happened to me yesterday evening outside of the Columbia Heights Giant.

I was walking down Park Road when a middle-aged black man on a bike stopped and asked if I could do something for him. He told me he was on a scavenger hunt, and the last item he needed was a picture of the bottom of a woman’s foot. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to see how other folks have overcome terrible condo developers. We bought a unit in a new 30-unit condo building. The developer hasn’t finished some construction tasks, hasn’t provided HOA accounting information, has rented out units that are for low-income housing on Airbnb, and failed to pay our water bill, which resulted in the water being turned off for the entire building.

We’ve tried to be nice or threatening to get them to respond. But short of suing them which will be costly, is there any advice or city services that could help motivate them to act?”

“Dear PoPville,

A few weeks ago as I was driving on I-66 in Rosslyn, a truck changed lanes in to my car. Fortunately no one was hurt and the damage was limited to a broken rear view mirror and dent on the front panel of the car above the wheel well (both on the driver’s side). The other driver was clearly at fault and it was late at night so we exchanged contact information and I took a photo of his driver’s license. I also photographed the damage to my car at the scene. The other driver was nice enough about it, and he mentioned that it was his friend’s car (which will be relevant in a second).

A few days later, I got a quote from my local dealership for the repair work, which came in around $900. Today, I contacted him about the damage to see how he wants to handle it. He said that because he was driving his friend’s car, his insurance won’t cover the damage to my car. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am visiting family in California soon for my aunt’s 70th birthday. Was thinking about bringing DC/MD/VA area food-related gifts because I know she would love that.

So far from Googling other forums and blogs I’ve come up with Langdon Wood’s bourbon maple syrups, Velatis’ salted caramel, Old Bay seasoning, spicy plum chutney from VA Chutney CO. and Hazel’s Fire Panda hot sauce.

Would love ideas on anything else that would be nice and easy to carry to the west coast.

Btw, I haven’t personally tried any of the list myself yet so they could be awful choices; feel free to let me know. Thanks!”
