Update: You can read a story in Washingtonian with the restaurant’s side of the story including:

Armstrong says the manager handled the situation with professionalism as she was trained. He says when she asked the friends to leave, they said, ‘We’re not leaving, you’ll have to drag us out of here.'”

“We had no choice but to call the police,” says Armstrong. Since opening Restaurant Eve in Alexandria 15 years ago, he says it’s the first time the authorities have gotten involved with a customer.

“Dear PoPville,

It was 80 degrees in DC so it was only right to grab dinner and drinks with a friends. My girlfriend just moved to Southwest so it was a great chance to check out her new digs and then head out for bites and libations. As we were cruising the new Wharf boardwalk, she mentioned that there’s a new Thai restaurant. Since I just returned from Thailand, I said yes let’s continue the celebration.

We walked through the busy doors of Kaliwa, a Filipino, Korean and Thai fusion restaurant and found a seat at the bar. We sat down to one drink menu and one food menu slapped on the counter. After sitting there for 15 minutes, I asked the bartender if we could order food. He took our order that included a noodle dish and their signature whole fried fish. Once our food arrived, we noticed that the noodle dish was more of a soup and we were expecting a food item similar to pad thai or lo mein.

My friend asked one of the employees, who turned out to be the manager if we were able to get additional noodles but she stated that we would be charged the same price as the meal since the noodles are handmade. I told her nevermind and we continued to chow down while catching up on our recent trips aboard. As we continued our conversation, this woman “manager” offered an additional pour of wine for the lack of noodles in the dish. Such a nice gesture so we thought.

As we continued to indulge, I noticed that my friend staring at our shared meal while pulling out a long strand of black hair from the fish entree that we were eating. In our disgusts, We called over one of the servers to show him. He took the plate to show the woman manager. After a few minutes of reviewing the hair, she came over to address our issue. We were not trying to make a big deal of the situation and was just expecting a simple apology but before the expected “I am sorry but…,” she looked at my friend and say “this looks like your hair.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I own a row house in Park View and was just informed by my neighbor that he plans to turn his unit into 2 condos (of course) meaning major construction, an additional floor, deck etc and basement which will need to be excavated. While we want to be reasonable this likely means a big inconvenience for our future renters. Are there any renters or owners out there that have gone through something like this? Any lessons learned or recommendations? Will we likely have to discount our rental price?”

“Dear PoPville,

When a DC street parking meter is broken, how do you avoid a ticket AND officially register a request for repair? I know how to request a repair, dialing 311 gets you to the central phone line for DC parking meter repair requests but the voice mail states reporting a broken meter will not excuse a ticket. I’ve had a couple incidents lately where meters were broken, and I’d love to hear anyone’s experience with this regarding how to use the space but not receive a ticket: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I recently parked in a street cleaning zone when I shouldn’t have. Totally my fault but I’m new to car ownership in the district. When I realized my car had been towed I called DC parking enforcement in a panic and learned that they’d only towed it less than a block away. At first I was relieved not to have to go out to a tow yard somewhere but then I realized they’d still managed to gouge the hell out of my back bumper–8 deep scratches several inches long. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m starting a new business in DC and I’m in need of some help with the process. I’ve registered the business as an LLC and I have received my IRS EIN number, however, when when I attempt to register with the DC tax office, the options they provide online don’t match the description of the business. Even with all of the tips provided online, it seems like the process is intentionally complicated and tricky and not made for the weary. I’d love some assistance and/or advice for anyone that’s gone through the process of registering with DC and obtaining the necessary business licenses to legally do business. I even contacted the small business office to set up a meeting to go in and get some help but their availability was limited. If it helps, my business is selling re-purposed and redesigned items for home decor, dining, and kitchen. I’d also love any recommendations anyone has for tax attorneys and certified accountants who have experience working with small businesses.”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in in North Columbia Heights, but am struggling to find a quality butcher shop nearby. The butcher section at the Safeway and Giant near me simply don’t have the quality of cuts I prefer. Wondering if your readers have any suggestions?”
