“Dear PoPville,

Back in the day, the end all be all to sublets and roommate findings was Craigslist. In fact I’ve met some of my best friends as Craigslist strangers turned roommates. I now own, and periodically offer my guest room for rent (long term). But it seems people are migrating away from Craigslist and the multiplicity of options means it’s harder to aggregate searches and adverts.

With Craigslist becoming ever sketchier, and app based housing sites ever more popular, I’m curious what are considered reputable and popular sites for people to find informal housing. I.e roommates and sublets.”

Following is a letter sent to multiple government agencies:

“I am a DC Ward 4 Resident who is alarmed at the onslaught of Free2Move cars parked on Petworth’s streets. At Gallatin and 9th Sts. NW last night, there were Free2Move cars parked on every single corner of this intersection!

On my block, a Free2Move car (plate R-38355) has been parked for FIVE DAYS. Then another Free2Move car showed up last night on my block (plate R-38432).

Every. Single. Household. On. My. Block. Owns. At. Least. One. Car.
You know what that means? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m curious if readers feel increasing frustration with food delivery services like Instacart and GrubHub not delivering to the door. I note those specifically, because they have become the worst, in my experience, with refusing to park and deliver to my apartment. For companies that operate in urban areas, I have no clue why they don’t get why I would pay a 20% tip and a delivery fee to go retrieve my own food from across the street (and in the case of groceries – lug up three flights of stairs).

I’ve recently started sending it all back if they won’t deliver. No matter how much I need it it how hungry I am.”

“Dear PoPville,

I walk to work via NY Avenue east to west and I’ve noticed that Lafayette Square is barricaded in the mornings more and more often. What’s the deal? The weird thing is, you would think it would be for heightened security reasons, right? Interestingly, it’s not necessarily barricaded when foreign dignitaries are staying at Blair House, so what gives? Why the nuisance? Why can’t they wait to barricade after the morning commuters have passed through? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Just went for a walk around the tidal basin, and there’s a fence up around the cherry trees. A nice park ranger told me the the trees were in bad shape, and so they were treating and protecting the soil to allow them to recover.

Sounds reasonable, but I wouldn’t want to be on that path this weekend. Something to keep in mind.”

“Dear PoPville,

I contacted someone based on a Craigslist ad for an apartment, and after some emails, learned the apartment is not ready to show till late April. The agent asked for some information about myself (occupation, age, why looking to move, whether current landlord would serve as a reference, etc) and when I provided it, he wrote back the following:

“Your move in date of May 1st is fine, however, due to rush and high demands for apartments, i will advise that you put a hold-on (reserve) the unit and take it off the market now. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have a super sweet golden retriever that is severely mild-mannered and truly an angel. Everyone who meets him asks if he is a therapy dog. I am writing to see if this community knows any resources or groups that might be in search of a therapy dog. It could be in someone’s residence, an elderly home, someone who has a kid learning to read and can read to my dog (I hear this is helpful to build confidence), someone with a chronic illness living at home. He is not licensed so I am almost positive I can’t bring him to hospitals. I am looking into getting him licensed but this is more of a casual ask to see who might benefit with time with the pup. He has a healing presence and I would be happy to share him for a few hours a week if it would be helpful to anyone.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve noticed something strange using Bluetooth headphones on the Mall, and was wondering if you had heard of or experienced anything similar.

On the North side of the Mall, starting infront of the Natural History Museum and lasting to the National Gallery of Art, my Bluetooth headphones experience interference and my Spotify app skips. I use my Bluetooth headphones and the Spotify app regularly and for long periods of time, and only experience this strange interference effect on that stretch of the Mall. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

In September 2015, my wife and I bought our home in the Woodridge area of D.C. While it was further out than was ideal, the price was right and the neighborhood seemed up and coming. For the most part, the up and coming part remains true. However, there is an exception. A neighboring house is the blight of our existence in Woodridge. Further, it is the historic blight of many of our neighbors.

Here is some transactional history on this vacant and blighted fire, health, and safety hazard of a house: (more…)
