“Dear PoPville,

There’s a lot of cyclists on PoPville and would love to get some advice on what type of bicycle to buy.

I live adjacent to the C&O canal path, so would like to get something that works well on gravel paths. Further, I have a baby and would eventually like to start commuting with the kid. And, finally, I am interested in overnight bike touring. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I would love to pose a question to the community in light of the discussion around the new ByndFit gym:

Maybe we can just crowdsource it from comments, but I will also just ask directly in case anyone has something like this just lying around: Does anyone have a spreadsheet or list of all of the pools suitable for lap swimming in the District, their hours, and the cost to use? I know that there are some DPR options, but I was hoping to unearth any hidden gems, e.g., the Fairmont Hotel pool in the West End (you can purchase a membership to swim there, but I don’t know the price). And I am talking about pools for lap swimming, specifically). Just want to see what we can put together. And yes, I sorely miss the YMCA on Rhode Island and 17th, with the huge pool open from 5AM to 11PM. Thank you all”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m a dog owner living in southern Shaw. My dog is a rescue and has fear aggression around other dogs, which we’ve tried to work on, but our vet has told us she likely always will be fearful and aggressive around other dogs. We have the proper harness and leash length to keep her and other dogs safe.

At times we encounter off-leash dogs. While I can’t for the life of me understand why they wouldn’t just take their dog to the Shaw dog park a few blocks away, usually owners are respectful and leash/pick up their dogs when we politely ask, with little to no fuss.

We regularly (1-2 times a month) encounter a group of adults walking a few dogs in our neighborhood who always walk one dog off-leash, while the others are leashed. (more…)

TLDR: A laptop may or may not have been stolen from a restaurant – what’s the restaurant’s obligation to their guests?

“Dear PoPville,

A man was walking past us when three men run up after him in gray pants and vests. They asked him what he was doing “in the restaurant”. He claimed to be looking for a friend. He was carrying a shopping bag and a laptop sleeve or zip up binder case. As I listened, I learned he had walked into the restaurant and rummaged through the coat rack kept near the entrance and then left. They asked to look through his bag. He said yes and emptied out the plastic shopping bag. It contained socks and a hat and possibly some toiletries. This made me believe he was homeless due to how it was all folded and clean but not in any packaging along with the clothes he was wearing. They then asked to see the laptop sleeve. He refused and argued with them. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday, our neighbors woke up to this graffiti on the property. Apparently it’s the 18th Street gang (according to another neighbor). We live in upper Petworth and wonder if anyone has seen anything similar? There is also graffiti from MS-13 at the other end of our alley. I should mention that we have contacted Brandon Todd and the neighbors have filed a police report.”

“Dear PoPville,

My roommate and I live in a row house with a theoretically working fireplace but we’ve been told the chimney needs to be swept first. Would love if the community could be tapped for potential recs.”

“Dear PoPville,

Not all heroes wear capes. I ordered way too many Girl Scout cookies from my niece so that I could feed my entire office and also help my niece reach her cookie sale goals. The unmarked box had not even been outside my door for more than 5 minutes before a porch pirate came by. If it wasn’t for this hero who literally stopped to get out of his vehicle and prevent the theft, the box would have been stolen. I was way too confused when I came outside to understand what happened. Be on the lookout for the thief. And if you know the HERO, please let me know so I can give him proper thanks. [video of incident here.]”

“Dear PoPville,

My boyfriend and I recently adopted a 2 year old Havanese rescue from a local shelter in the area. The shelter didn’t really tell us much on his background other than that he was pretty shy. Immediately when we got home, he ran under our couch and has taken shelter there ever since for two weeks and only comes out when we’re not home or at night when we’re sleeping (we bought a doggie cam so we can check up on him and see what he’s doing). We got him a crate and bed which he hardly uses. The only advice I’ve seen online is to ignore and leave him alone and he will start to be more comfortable with us on his own.

I know there are a ton of adopters on here and I was wondering if there is anything else we should be doing or if anyone has had experience similar to this?”

“Dear PoPville,

In a few months, I’ll be looking to rent a rowhouse in NW DC that provides access to a fenced-in backyard area, so that my dog can go in/out freely during the day. I currently have this living situation in DC, so I want to hold on to it if possible! Because it seems like these types of properties are pretty rare, I’m hoping to hire a realtor to help find this type of rental property in a neighborhood that I want to be in. (more…)
