“Dear PoPville,

I would love to hear if anyone has experience with being a living liver donor. A friend of a friends kid needs a new one and mine is in great shape so I am putting my organ into the pool of options to help if ultimately selected and would like to hear from those who have been through it especially locally. A reader writes in last night from Chinatown: “This guy had a light up hat that said “C*NT” and they [the gym employees] didn’t ask him to remove it. We never directly asked them to remove it because we could see that they saw the hat but no one took initiative to ask him to remove it despite it lighting up and having giant letters.”

Does the gym have an obligation to make the man remove his hat if others find it objectionable?

Ed. Note: It’s hard to see the full writing from the photo above but I did I search (God help the targeted ads I’m about to start seeing) and did find many hats for sale with that word on it.

“Dear PoPville,

My company is planning a major event in November — a chance to “wow” ~300 of our most important clients. I’m seeking recommendations for locations in downtown DC to hold an evening reception. We’re hoping to get away from hotel ballrooms and do something with a little more DC flair, so to speak. Don’t worry about budget … just give me your best ideas!”

“Dear PoPville,

I have a very simple front porch renovation that I need a proposed drawing of for the DCRA Homeowners Center (to get my permits). We’re doing the work ourselves and know what we want. Can anyone please recommend a draftsman who can help us get the proposed drawing(s) done affordably? Thank you!”

“Dear PoPville,

My moms turns 80 this spring and I am looking for recommendations for a restaurant that would be able to accommodate a party of about 15-20 people that would also offer true gluten-free options (due to celiac’s disease…not just a preference to eat gluten-free… in other words, no cross-contamination as it is a true food allergy). Thanks!”

I got tons of messages yesterday starting around 5:30pm like this one:

“I just saw 10+ uniformed police at Columbia Heights metro, complete with a table set up for bag searches and a scanning device of some sort. A few uniforms said anti-terrorism, others TSA. I heard them telling people they stopped that checks were random. Do you have any context on this?”

Metro Transit Police have been doing random searches since at least 2008. We also spoke about random inspections in 2010.

“Dear PoPville,

I am interested to know if any of your readers have suggestions on how to handle a situation. We have a developer in our neighborhood (Kingman Park) who came in and flipped a house on only two postcard permits. This includes adding two full bathrooms, an HVAC, moving the main plumbing line and shifting the entire kitchen, moving the electrical, gas, and plumbing. After complaining to DCRA for almost a month, during which time the house was actually listed on the market/came under contract, the city finally issued a Stop Work Order.

DCRA assured us that the realtor would have to make the Stop Work Order known to the new potential buyer, but honestly we are not sure. Since the order has been put on the house, the developer has covered the windows and started doing work again inside the house. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Perhaps your readers can informally weigh in on the question of which DC hospital has the most effective emergency room and why.

It could be helpful when a future predicament arrives.

It’s possible I’ve left one or two out, but the options seem to be: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My car was parked on a Sunday morning in a legal parking space on U St NW (in September.) When my daughter and came back to the car after exercising, we saw the note from the police officer and the damage to the front of my car (pics above).

A homeless man told us that the street sweeping vehicle backed into my car – which makes since given the damage. Mr. Chapman, the supervisor of the driver in the street sweeping vehicle, said the driver claimed he swerved to miss a pedestrian and hit my car. Interestingly, there is no damage to the driver side of the car. The damage is in the front. Also, this was early on a Sunday morning – not many people are out and about on U Street at that hour.

The timing could not be worse. (more…)
