“Dear PoPville,

I go usually go to Hair Cuttery in Dupont Circle, because they have really affordable hair cuts. I know that my usual guy lives paycheck to paycheck so I was concerned. Hair stylists live off tips much like waiters. I reached out to my stylist and he said Hair Cuttery has done nothing to help them during this time. I sent my stylist money via CashApp, but there are 21 stylists at the Dupont Hair Cuttery. I started a GoFundMe to try and bring attention to the situation- maybe you could help spread the word?”

“Dear PoPville,

I was hoping you could call attention to the problem of MedStar Georgetown employees discarding used personal protective equipment–like gloves, masks, and medical caps (see above)–on the streets and sidewalks of Burleith. While this has medical waste issue has been consistent June 2019, the problem has taken on special significance in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The community has to track the problem.

As of writing, approximately 129 medical masks, gloves, caps, and the like have been found in Burleith, including 42 since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic on March 11th. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I see so many of your readers are looking for ways to help, which is amazing. I have a friend who is an ESL teacher in DC, Mariel Vallano. She started a Go Fund Me page to help her students who are going hungry. Mariel is doing wonderful work to help her students whose families can’t afford milk or bread, let alone laptops. But there are many families at her school who need help. These sweet children she teaches want to learn and succeed but many go to bed with tummy aches because they haven’t eaten since breakfast. Mariel’s students tell her they live in constant fear – not having food, being evicted, or worse. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My daughter is a first grade student at a DCPS. Since it looks like it is going to be awhile before in person school resumes, I am wondering if your readers know of any resources where I can find a remote reading tutor? I’ve reached out to some teachers but they are all busy with remote learning. My daughter is on the cusp of reading independently and I don’t wan to lose the momentum before she starts second grade. I’ve seen a lot of posts about high school and college students willing to give their time for tutoring but I am looking for someone trained in phonics. Willing to pay of course.”

“Dear PoPville,

This was taken around 10pm [Ed. Note still taken from a video showing lots of rats] last night in the alley behind the restaurants (mostly closed) located in the 2300 block of 18th St NW and Champlain St NW. Although this has always been an issue, we have seen increased numbers and aggressive behavior from the rats. The city has provided the black boxes and visits by abatement trucks but the situation has worsened. The rats have caused excessive damage to the car engines parked in the alley block. We have tried high frequency sonar, moth balls, oils etc to no avail. Looking for any suggestions of who/where to turn for proven results?”

“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted you to be aware and maybe post that folks should be careful with deliveries these days!
I usually have deliveries made to my office which is not an option right now.

A big Chewy box was taken off of our front porch the other day – and the contents emptied and then the people had the nerve to put it out at the recycle bin. (more…)

Ed. Note: You guys rule. I want to take the opportunity to thank all those who’ve been so supportive of me and so many others during these crazy days. I got this email yesterday from the DC Food Project “Regarding our Emergency Weekend Bag Program. Since your article was posted we have raised close to $11K, which will allow us to continue helping our school communities gain access to additional food, during these unknown times. We can’t thank you enough.”

“Dear PoPville,

Our household is set to get the full $2,400 from the stimulus, but we have secure jobs and the pandemic has only served to reduce our expenses. While we could always throw the money at our mortgage, we have decided that we want to spend our stimulus check in a way that maximizes its impact on the local economy and/or struggling DC residents. Ed. Note: If this is you, please email [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP. PoPville is not affiliated with either party, please proceed with any potential connection at your own risk using caution as you would any online encounter. For those curious about past missed connections, some have been made and when possible I’ll try to update when/if more are made.

“Dear PoPville,

Is a Missed Connection post appropriate during a pandemic? Because I’ve spent the last 24 hours kicking myself for not striking up a conversation, and thought maybe the community could help generate a beacon of light in this fog of socially-distanced isolation.
