“Dear PoPville,

Around October 16 or 17th, in NW DC, four expensive bikes were stolen from a “secure” bike facility and the U-locks were cut through. On Saturday October 18th, building residents found all four bikes for sale on offerup by the same seller (screenshot below). The seller used this SAME background in each advertisement. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’d like to hear if folks know of bars/restaurants that will be showing election returns on Nov 3. I’ve looked online but nothing much comes up. Four years ago I watched at Red Derby and have fond memories of the experience (despite the outcome of the election). I hope that there are opportunities to come together to watch the drama unfold, despite COVID realities.”

Ed. Note: Could be some good overlap for our recent discussions on where to watch sports and where to go while staying warm outside. And of course, I second and recommend, always, Red Derby.

“Dear PoPville,

Has anyone ever had any luck reversing/getting a refund on Uber toll fees on an Uber or Lyft ride from DC to our area?

I recently rode with an Uber driver who did not have an EZPass and chose to take I-66 instead of the toll road which added significant time to the trip. I checked my reciept and was still charged for the toll.

The EZPass is available at no extra cost to Uber drivers and I suppose I’ll be asking or looking for one whenever I board an Uber…”

“Dear PoPville,

I moved out of DC in January for school – I did not break my lease, had all of my housemates confirm, and also tried to replace my vacancy (set up two CL postings, forwarded responses to the housemates, etc.). For a couple months now I’ve been trying to get my security deposit back but to no avail. The landlord/rental company has said they aren’t responsible for it but the housemates are refusing to return my deposit. I’ve contacted OAT but wanted to see what are other avenues to consider. This whole situation sucks because I don’t wanna screw the old housemates over (plus small claims court sounds exhausting) but also I need that money!”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in 16th Street Heights and I’m wondering if anyone else regularly hears a singular loud boom go off in the evening. I feel like it started in the summer around the time of the nightly protest fireworks, but while the neighborhood fireworks have pretty much stopped, this single loud boom continues. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I reserved parking for a moving truck in front of a house I’m moving into through the DC TOPS system about two weeks ago for a move later this week. Two weeks ago, there was regular 2 hour limit residents excepted zone parking on both sides of the street. I walked back by the house yesterday, and now there’s only parking on the opposite side of the street except on Thursdays when you can park in front of my house (presumably for street cleaning). Do I even need to print and post the signs now? Is it legal for a moving truck to park there on a Friday? Can I use the signs for the opposite side of the street?”

Ed. Note: Good news, sorta, since we’re still only in phase two, these opposite side of the street parking signs don’t apply since street sweeping is still suspended.

“Dear PoPville,

I’m planning on voting in-person on Election Day. Wasn’t able to get a mail in ballot on time and can’t swing early voting. If the polling place opens at 7, any advice on what time I should arrive to not wait too long in line once they’re open? I’d be going to the polling station near Union Market and was thinking of arriving around 6 but might have to be earlier. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

my son is going to start day care on Friday before my wife goes back to work on Monday. I’ve taken the day off so we can sort of ease each other’s nerves. Now, in ordinary times, we would pull on some non-sweat pants, go somewhere to have a few drinks, and have a conversation uninterrupted by silly dancing, noise-making, book-reading, and other means of keeping a baby entertained that usually define our days. But there’s a pandemic on and the weather is going to be unpleasant on Friday. Does anyone know of a place where we can safely pass some time, preferably with a bar, preferably outdoors, preferably out of the rain, and preferably in the vicinity of a space heater? (high of 54 on Friday…)

We’d be grateful for any guidance the community could offer.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am a Lecturer at Howard University. There is a movement going on there right now to address some long-standing labor issues, most significantly, that Howard Lecturers are paid less than any DC area university, and that administrators impose a bizarre 7 year cap on employment, so Lecturers are automatically fired after 7 years. It is actually how Toni Morrison was fired from Howard… (more…)
