“Dear PoPville,

I live in Petworth and somewhere about a year ago, all the rowhouses that come up for sale started being painted like pandas: white brick, black windows and, whaddya call em… lintels.

How did this happen? At first I thought it was because a contractor got a deal on some paint, but then I started seeing it everything, from flips to genuinely nice renovations. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Can we revisit the roll up door installer topic?

As far as I can tell, the only installer who is willing to file permits is Alan Pooner (I checked the active permits at DCRA), but he’s got a 59 week(!) backlog.

I’ve contacted at least a dozen other companies, and nobody else wants to touch permits…

Does anyone have guidance on how to find a roll up door installer who will file a permit, or any suggestions on how to get a permit yourself?”

“Dear PoPville,

A developer bought the house next door and is planning a BIG renovation and I would love to get the ‘ville’s advice on what to expect from anyone who may have lived through this level of construction. They are taking your basic 15-foot wide, two-story Columbia Heights rowhouse and expanding up one floor, down 6 ft, and back 10ft (Going from 3 bed 1 bath to 11 bed 6 bath).

I have so many questions. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

We had a visitor in our new house between us closing and moving in. She seems like a young teenager and she left a bunch of stuff behind and we want to try to get whatever we can to back to her. Maybe throw in a little cash to help? We don’t want to disrespectfully leave her stuff in a garbage bag out front. If someone who knows her and is not the reason she ran away sees this and could help?”

Ed. Note: If any of these are you, please email [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP. PoPville is not affiliated with either party, please proceed with any potential connection at your own risk using caution as you would any online encounter. For those curious about past missed connections, some have been made and when possible I’ll try to update when/if more are made.

“Dear PoPville,

I’m writing on behalf of two of my single friends. We were out for drinks at Right Proper on Tuesday April 13th at 7pm. Both of my friends, one male and one female (if it matters) thought our waitress was super cute. She had short hair and was wearing a crop top and high waisted pants. She might remember our group because my one interested friend (the lady) accidentally ordered 5 beers and no food. She also accidentally ordered a large amount of to-go cheese. As you can see, she is a keeper. The other interested friend is a straight white guy (unfortunately) and he ordered a reasonable amount of beer (also a keeper). We tried to leave their numbers, but there are no pens in this pandemic! Anyway, if she sees this, we thought we’d cover our bases and offer up a man and a woman (individually, not together…).”

“Dear PoPville,

I live on River Rd NW which has turned into a massive pothole both inbound and outbound from the Maryland border all the way into Wisconsin Ave, by the Tenleytown Target. They are nearly impossible to ignore unless you can somehow turn your car into a video game joystick. As this is a truck route into the city, the potholes seem to be getting worse. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have a question for the masses – I’ve never gotten gel or acrylic nails before and would love to try it now that I’m fully vaccinated, but only with someone who really knows what they’re doing. Anyone have a nail tech or salon in NW DC they really trust and would recommend for gel or acrylic?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m writing because, for the past 8 months, my roommates and I have dealt with horrible neighbors. So bad, in fact, that the entire block has held meetings about what to do – including the landlord. Unfortunately, the landlord cannot evict them because of the eviction moratorium, and his attempts to settle them down have done little to nothing.

Overall, our concerns are the following: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if any fellow ex-WSC members are being bombarded with multiple weekly voicemail messages trying to “win back their loyalty”. I’ve asked the Columbia Heights WSC folks to remove my information from their system three times already, but the calls have still been relentless. They’re clearly automated and come from different numbers each time with no discernable pattern, so blocking hasn’t helped. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!”

And earlier this week from the DC Office of the Attorney General:

“Attorney General Karl A. Racine announced the parent company of Washington Sports Club will be required to pay a $100,000 fine to the District to resolve allegations that the company failed to adhere to the District’s COVID-19 health and safety orders, misinformed its patrons, and put the heath of District residents at risk. “Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if anyone else is having this problem or if this is somehow user error on my end. I’ve previously reserved lanes at indoor pools, as is required during COVID. However, for the last few weeks, I’ve been unable to do so. When I try to login, it says there is no account under that email. So then I tried to create an account, and it says there is already an account associated with that email. Then I try “forget password” and reset the password, but then get the same error message when I try to log in (no account under that email). Is anyone else having this issue reserving space through DPR?”
