“Dear PoPville,

Earlier this year I was laid off due to COVID and since I worked in Maryland I received a Maryland unemployment card, however because I live in DC my card was flagged for fraud and closed. I went through the process to open the card again and the state unemployment agency certified my identity, but I still don’t have access to the money I had on the card when I was unemployed. “Dear PoPville,

I am wondering if someone can give me information on what the “period remaining value” means in your WMATA balance?

Like a lot of people, I stopped filling my SmartBenefits order/tax free method of loading mySmartTrip card in April 2020. I’ve only ridden the metro/bus a handful of times since then and when I tapped my card last time, the turnstile indicated that my current balance on the card was over $1,000! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

A guy who has been doing some pretty creepy stuff in the north dupont and kalorama area the last few days. It’s getting a lot of discussion on nextdoor and my building listserv. Just want to make sure people are aware because it’s pretty frightening to me.

There’s a guy who has been spotted following people (mostly women) around the neighborhood last night and this morning. Spotted around Dolcezza on Connecticut, near the Spanish Steps, near 18th and S, and on the 2100 block of S Street. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

We are among the many families that formed learning pods to survive a year of remote schooling. Our pod purchased elementary school sized desks and chairs, along with a variety of school supplies that we will no longer need once regular school reopens in the fall (hallelujah!). We’d love to donate them to someplace that could really use these school items, rather than just take them to Goodwill or similar. Any ideas?”

“Dear PoPville,

On Saturday, June 5th at roughly 2:00pm my boyfriend and I came across a cyclist who had just been hit by a car (or he possibly hit the car, that part is unclear). This was at the intersection of Lincoln and Franklin NE near the Edgewood Rec center and Greenwood Cemetery. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I failed in the witty response department – usually my forté. This Saturday afternoon in AdMo on Columbia Rd, right outside the hardware store. You had just finished a run it looked like and were putting on maybe a red shirt. I was in crazy blue striped leggings, clogs, and with a dorky backpack on. You said, “Nice leggings” and all I could come back with was, “Thank you, they’re fun” what I really should have responded with – and was on the tip of my tongue – was, “Nice abs….”

Ed. Note: If this is you, please email [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP. PoPville is not affiliated with either party, please proceed with any potential connection at your own risk using caution as you would any online encounter. For those curious about past missed connections, some have been made and when possible I’ll try to update when/if more are made.

“Dear PoPville,

Is there any news about the D.C. DMV’s opening up or adding more appointments? We have been trying to get an appointment at ANY/ALL of the service centers and there appear to be no available appointments for a new driver’s license in the year of our lord 2021. Tips?”

“Dear Popville,

I’m hoping to get a little bit of crowd-sourced help on an issue I’ve been trying to fight for a few months now. I got a notification of unemployment benefits in the mail a while back. My name, my social security number, my “previous” (current) job, my address, etc. I am gainfully employed by DC as a teacher. I have been for many years. I have been fortunate to never need to apply for unemployment benefits. I have called DOES and emailed them repeatedly and gotten literally one human one time, despite many messages and emails. The one time I spoke to a human, she directed me to the “fraud hotline” which was actually just the main phone number for the IRS and not helpful at all.

Does anyone have any idea how to actually handle this? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Hoping you can maybe find guy–who knows he might be the one…

I (man in his early 30s) think I had a missed connection June 5th around 11am. Finishing up a run on the mall on the corner of 15th and Constitution, caught the eye of a handsome guy (late 20s, early 30s) also running. He was wearing a maroon shirt, and I was wearing a light green tank. (more…)
