I admit I shed my fair share of tears when Morty’s (Formerly Krupins) and home to a fine pastrami sandwich, closed back in 2010. Now, I have nothing against spas but this seems like an unworthy replacement…

“This shop is now open. I went in this week. It’s fabulous, and the owner is just awesome!”
Island Dyes website says:

In other frozen drink news – it’s free slurpee day from 7-Eleven:
“You’re invited to celebrate the most anticipated day of the year – 7-Eleven Day! It’s a wonder that it’s not a national holiday…yet! Stop in on Friday, 7/11/14, from 11am – 7pm and get a FREE small Slurpee drink. That’s right, a FREE small Slurpee drink and a true reason to say T.G.I.F.”

Park Place apartments at New Hampshire and Georgia Ave, NW
“Dear PoPville,
The tenants of Park Place were given notice recently that the building is for sale and we, as tenants, have first right to purchase. We are told that we have to form a tenant organization in order to make an offer. I think its fair to say that most people are not familiar with this process. I thought you might have some knowledge of this process or contacts within the DC real estate industry that can explain.”
Turns out the notice was just a formality – the building is not actually for sale it’s just one partner buying out another. And, thank the Lord, I’m told this will finally expedite filling the long vacant retail spaces. Updates as more info is known and leases are signed.

9th and U Street, NW
Still no confirmation about a Whole Foods for the vicinity of 9th and U St, NW but I am hearing more scuttlebutt – word is that a Warby Parker eye glass shop will be taking over a retail space nearby. You can see their current retail locations here. The source who hears this rumor also says that the type of new retail coming to 9th and U will be of a similar variety ie not just super high end like CityCenter but a bit more, God I’m hesitant to use the word – hip. So anyway, I’m wondering what type of retail (besides restaurants/bars) you guys think would realistically do well around 9th and U St, NW. Any fans of Warby Parker?

10th and I Street, NW
Thanks to all who sent emails and photos about Longchamp opening in CityCenter yesterday. You can see Longchamp’s website here to see the type of stuff they sell.

Thanks to a reader for sending word and the photo above showing the check cashing place next to McDonald’s on 14th Street just south of U has closed. It’ll be interesting to see who takes over that space. The check cashing place will be moving to 1515 U Street, NW under the new Primp Beauty Bar:

“Dear PoPville,
Not sure if you’ve done a post but I thought a crowdsource of best liquor store could be interesting. Maybe even have ranks based on cost, variety or rarity?”
We did one in 2009 but it’s probably time for a refresh – so in 2014 where’s your favorite liquor store based on cost, variety or rarity.
For cost I’m going with Costco!
