First up is LITERARY COCKTAILS with Chantal Tseng. Starting Friday October 30th, Tseng will create a changing menu inspired by literature. Daniel Searing and Carlie Steiner will launch special Thursday night events starting on November 5th. More details on Thursday nights will be available soon.

Petworth Citizen was opened by Paul W. Ruppert in September 2013 as a neighborhood bar with craft cocktails and innovative bar food.

Jerry Zawacki, who recently became chef, is creating a special bar snacks menu for this series.

Chantal Tseng is passionate about telling stories with her cocktails and linking them to classic literature. Happy Anniversary Upshur Street Books – Party Sunday:

“I hope you might join us for our First Anniversary Open House on Sunday night from 6-8pm in the new Third Floor space above Slim’s [4201 Georgia Ave, NW].

One year ago on November 1st, Upshur Street Books became a part of the DC literary community. Since then many people have contributed to help make the bookstore a success: owner Paul Ruppert; manager Anna Thorn; our booksellers Karin, Lily, Peter, and Sara; our customers; and lots and lots of amazing authors. We did it!

A new independent, community bookstore is an achievement to be proud of. Thanks for being a part of it – now come help us celebrate!

The party will take place at our newest event space on the third floor of the forthcoming Slim’s Diner. There will be music by Paperhaus and Sean Barna, food, drinks, special discounts, and delightful bookish conversation. The bookstore will be open from 10am to 9pm.”

Thanks to all who emailed about the closing of News World outside the Farragut North metro stop at Connecticut and K St, NW. This place had newspapers, journals and magazines from all over the world when it wasn’t so easy to get them. I understand the loss but admit to being a bit nostalgic.

From an email:

“Location: Shaw (located in The Shay) – 1924 8th Street Suite 105, NW
Opening Date: Friday October 30, 2015

Design and Important Details:

With the launch of Warby Parker M Street in Georgetown, we released a limited edition frame to celebrate: Percey in Crystal with a mirrored lens along with a custom lens pouch. We’re excited to re-release this frame exclusively to our D.C. retail customers, along with a lens pouch exclusive to Warby Parker Shaw.

Customers will be greeted by a soft-glowing individually-lit lettered sign and inside, they will find elegant displays of books, custom brass library lamps, and leather seating aplenty (for reading and relaxing). Suspended globe lighting, custom checkered terrazzo tiled floors, and a selection of books sourced from our favorite independent publishers (also for sale to take home) invite you to stay a while, whether just lounging or contemplating frame choices. We’re overjoyed that our friend and artist, Maira Kalman, has collaborated with us for our Shaw location: her distinctive (and incredible) drawings will line the walls of our new store.

Step into our photo booth to see how your new frames look. The Booth’s background is created by artist Alia Penner – whose madly creative pastiches illustrated our very first TV AD (and our first ever store photo-booth). Visitors will get a real-life photo strip and a digital copy mailed to them. (more…)

A reader reports:

“I was in Park’s Hardware on H St. NE on Saturday, and the owner said that they’re planning to close at the end of November. I know you had something back in August about the building being up for sale – presumably this means they have found a buyer. She blamed declining business on the Home Depot a couple of miles away (although the Home Depot has been there since ’02). I didn’t ask what was going to be coming in to the space after they close. I’ll miss having a hardware store in walking distance, as well as their cool sign.”
