8th and Florida Ave, NW

A reader reports:

“Saw Chrome Industries and Frank and Oak (said Tuesday is their last day) Ed. Note: Their website list this store as a “Washington DC Pop-Up” are also closing at The Shay. They seem to be hemorrhaging tenants over there.”

Washingtonian reported:

“Chrome Industries’ DC shop is soon shutting its doors, marking the third retail closure for high-end development The Shay since September.

The 8th Street, Northwest, store will remain open through November and December and close in the new year.

Chrome and Frank and Oak will follow other closures at The Shay including Steven Alan, Bucketfeet, and Kit & Ace. Before we bury retail at The Shay completely, it’s worth noting that Argent will be replacing Kit & Ace and Violet Boutique will be popping up in the Steven Alan space. Updates on the rest of the retail spaces as more is known.

From an email:

We at Violet Boutique are excited to announce that we are moving from our current Georgetown location at the end of November, and are headed to the Shaw neighborhood. You may remember that we relocated from Adams Morgan to Georgetown in 2016, and we learned so much by being able to expand our square footage, and by testing the waters in a retail-heavy neighborhood.

Our last day in Georgetown (3289 M Street, NW) will be Sunday, November 26!

1924 8th Street, NW

And in December – we’re back. We will be opening a temporary pop-up shop from 12/1 – 12/31 in The Shay (1924 8th St NW – the former Steven Alan space), and the tentative opening date for our new location (a few doors down from the pop-up space) is March 2018. (more…)

From a press release:

“After a year and a half of serving up falooda and noodles inside Union Market, the Toli Moli team of Simone Jacobson, Jocelyn Law-Yone, and Eric Wang prepares to open a cultural hub celebrating the spice diaspora: Toli Moli Burmese Bodega.

“As citizens of the world, our collective identities revolve around art, food, community, and ideas,” says Jacobson. “We love to bring people together and the bodega space is an opportunity to share with DC how we grew up eating all over the map. It’s the very definition of ‘toli moli’, a little of this and a little of that. We’re most excited about being a place that uplifts other Asian American, woman-owned, and immigrant-run businesses. This is an exciting opportunity for us to grow and bring our ‘falooda nation’ family along with us.” (more…)

600 H Street, NE

From Solid State Books:

“Solid State Books is opening a holiday pop-up this Friday, November 17, in The Apollo at 600 H St NE, a few doors down from our permanent location (where construction progress continues). We’ll have books for adults and children, cards, paper goods, and other gifts. On Small Business Saturday (November 25), we’re planning games and prizes, cider and donuts, and visits from local authors. We’re also hosting children’s story time in The Apollo’s rooftop lounge a few weekdays and weekend mornings this winter.”

I’ve been getting pretty regular queries about what’s coming next to the Giant and Blue Mercury in Cathedral Heights – now we know – a Proper Topper pop up! From the owners:

“We are planning to open on Friday, Nov. 24th, in the space adjacent to Blue Mercury at the corner of Wisconsin and Newark. We’ll be there (10 – 8 M – F, 10 – 6 Sat, 12-5 Sun) through the end of December … and perhaps beyond.

My Dupont shop — where I’ve been since 1995, believe it or not! — continues to thrive, and we’re working on plans to expand that location in 2018.

In both locations, we’ll have an abundance of local goods, including our own DCProper collection of shirts and hats; in-store pick up for online purchases; curbside service for shoppers on the fly. Plus great play lists heavy on local music, and the friendliest staff around.Let Amazon try to match that : )”

5015 Connecticut Ave, NW

From Politics and Prose:

“The history of Politics and Prose has been one of periodic expansion. Since its founding 33 years ago, the bookstore has grown from a single, narrow space on the west side of Connecticut Avenue NW to its current location consisting of three storefronts on the avenue’s east side. But even that enlarged space, totaling about 11,500 square feet, hasn’t been enough to accommodate the store’s increasing activities and staff.

Now that’s about to change. The recent closing of Regal Customs Cleaners next to P&P has opened the way for a further expansion of the bookstore. Plans call for a part of the former cleaners to be converted into new retail space for books and non-book items. The rest will be turned into offices and storage areas, enabling a number of P&P staff members currently housed in a nearby condo to relocate and work out of the store itself.

Renovation of the former cleaners has already begun and is due for completion by February. (more…)
