I’ve been getting pretty regular queries about what’s coming next to the Giant and Blue Mercury in Cathedral Heights – now we know – a Proper Topper pop up! From the owners:

“We are planning to open on Friday, Nov. 24th, in the space adjacent to Blue Mercury at the corner of Wisconsin and Newark. We’ll be there (10 – 8 M – F, 10 – 6 Sat, 12-5 Sun) through the end of December … and perhaps beyond.

My Dupont shop — where I’ve been since 1995, believe it or not! — continues to thrive, and we’re working on plans to expand that location in 2018.

In both locations, we’ll have an abundance of local goods, including our own DCProper collection of shirts and hats; in-store pick up for online purchases; curbside service for shoppers on the fly. Plus great play lists heavy on local music, and the friendliest staff around.Let Amazon try to match that : )”

From Politics and Prose:

“The history of Politics and Prose has been one of periodic expansion. Since its founding 33 years ago, the bookstore has grown from a single, narrow space on the west side of Connecticut Avenue NW to its current location consisting of three storefronts on the avenue’s east side. But even that enlarged space, totaling about 11,500 square feet, hasn’t been enough to accommodate the store’s increasing activities and staff.

Now that’s about to change. The recent closing of Regal Customs Cleaners next to P&P has opened the way for a further expansion of the bookstore. Plans call for a part of the former cleaners to be converted into new retail space for books and non-book items. The rest will be turned into offices and storage areas, enabling a number of P&P staff members currently housed in a nearby condo to relocate and work out of the store itself.

Renovation of the former cleaners has already begun and is due for completion by February. (more…)

On October 4th Pinz-N-Needlez wrote on their Facebook:

Thank you to every last artist and collector that chose to make the shop home and contribute to our small part of history in this microcosm of life.

Back in 2009 they moved next door. Their old space is now home to Service Bar.
