Well no way around it, this sucks. Last night The Hill is Home reported: “According to their social media manager, the closure is the owners’ personal decision and the Fredericksburg, Virginia, store will still be open.”

Riverby’s website says:

“Riverby Books DC will be closing. Please come and buy some handfuls (or armfuls) of books and use your store credit!

We are NO LONGER BUYING BOOKS.”

Some may recall that back in 2015 Riverby Books had closed after their owner, Mr. Cymrot, was hit by truck and killed. Fortunately they were able to reopen later that year. This is a serious bummer.

Thanks to Rachel for sending. Patagonia is currently located at 1048 Wisconsin Ave, NW:

“Housed in an old factory that once produced industrial-size scales, our store carries a nice assortment of quality Patagonia clothing and gear for outdoor sports, travel and everyday living. A center for environmental activism, we hold regular events, provide meeting space for nonprofits and have an energized staff that advocates for conservation on Capitol Hill and volunteers with groups like the Anacostia Watershed Society. Drop in to meet them and learn more about our remarkable company.”

Anyone know what’s going to happen to that cool location?

From the owners of Each Peach Market and Pear Plum Cafe:

“We are announcing that as of December 24th, 2018, Each Peach will no longer be the operators of Lulabelle’s Sweet Shop, choosing instead to focus on our other businesses in Mt. Pleasant. For the last year, Lulabelle’s has functioned as a collaboration between Emily Friedberg and Jeanlouise Conaway of Each Peach Market and Pear Plum Cafe in Mt. Pleasant and Julie Wineinger, owner of Willow Fashion. Each Peach was running the coffee and ice cream service, as well as all kitchen operations. “We are sad to leave Upshur Street and have loved getting to know a new neighborhood but ultimately, the logistics of having a kitchen offsite from our primary business location has proved to be difficult to manage.”

Lulabelle’s will close on Dec 24th for the Christmas Holiday and to make some adjustments to the space, and will reopen tentatively on January 8th, 2019. (more…)

Thanks to all who emailed about the Georgetown Wawa coming soon signage after seeing this morning’s post on the one coming to Adams Morgan. Georgetown looks to be opening any day now. The takeover is real. Wawa opened their first D.C. location on 19th Street way back on December 14th 2017. Blessed be his name. Stay tuned for an exact opening date as soon as we know it.

Ed. Note: Progress seems to be slow going for the Columbia Heights Wawa but updates when we learn more about the timing their too.

The scuttlebutt that Best Buy was closing in Tenleytown, turned out to be true. On the listserv I had seen some rumors from folks hearing that the ACE Hardware on the lower level would also be closing. I’m happy to say that is not the case – I hear that ACE is safe and sound in this space, which is a relief.

As for the Best Buy space I continue to hear two things. 1. That somehow the space may have been leased by Amazon. 2. The strongest rumor (more…)

5 months ago I was 97% sure Adams Morgan was getting a Wawa. On November 1st I was 99% sure it was coming to the former BicycleSpace space. Let’s kick it to 100% thanks to the Washington Business Journal.

For those not familiar with Wawa it supposedly restores the youth of anyone who eats or bathes in its hoagies.

Updates as they get closer to opening.

Look who has their 10 year anniversary coming up?!?!?! [Minus a slight hiccup.] Bless you Hana Japanese Market. And bless your rice balls. This is the salmon. Do NOT be frightened by the cat with a question mark sticker, it is delicious. And only $2.

*Obviously $1 dollar beer specials is the ultimate in frugal spending.

I opened it wrong about a hundred times before I turned it over: (more…)

Passed on from the Old Takoma Business Association:

“Dear Takoma Park community and loyal PollySue’s customers,

Today is the 19th anniversary of PollySue’s Vintage Shop. We opened opened on November 1, 1999. My desire to find and share the most beautiful, one of a kind vintage clothes with others was the motivation to start the business but it because so much more. In the nineteen years, we have seen a generation grow up and start their own families. We have outfitted countless brides, prom-goers, theatrical productions and photo shoots. The shop has weathered recessions, elections, blizzards, and hurricanes.

It is with equal amounts of hopefulness and sadness that I announce that PollySue’s will be closing on December 31, 2018. (more…)
