3rd and K St, NE was formerly home to Zuppa Fresca which abruptly closed back in June 2012.

For those who’ve been missing the Corner Bakery at Union Station, the new one opening up at 500 North Capitol St, NW looks really close to opening. The former space at Union Station will become a Le Pain Quotidien. This new Corner Baker is much bigger than the one in Union Station. Should be open any day now.

Back in June 2012 we learned that the owners of The Pug (H St, NE), Solly’s (U St, NW) and Sova (formerly of H St, NE) were bringing a new neighborhood bar, grill and coffee Lounge to Brookland. At that time they were hoping to open in the former Library space at 3514 12th Street, NE. Pug owner and Brookland resident Tony T explained their vision to us:

We are putting together a family friendly, neighborhood bar and grill. The coffee element that Frank brings is also an integral part of what we are doing.

I live just a few blocks away, so I’m looking to make a place where I can take the kids to dinner as well as a place the softball team can come for a few pitchers after a game. the neighborhood bar feel is very important, but with the chef we’re bringing on board, the menu is going to be much broader than hot dogs and 13th street meats off of the Pug’s grill. Although both may be included to keep the kids happy.

The long and short of it is, we want a place to eat and drink that caters to the families and folks who have been in Brookland for years, as well as a place for the newer folks.

The bad news is that the former Library space, obviously, didn’t work out – the good news is that they found an even better corner location – 12th and Jackson St, NE:

And I’m happy to say the vision of coffee/bar/restaurant remains. Last week I spoke with the future owner who told me the space will have room for around 55 seated inside and an awesome 25 person outdoor patio. For the outdoor patio think Pearl Dive Oyster Palace and Cusbah that have the roll down window with their outdoor seating:

If all goes according to plan they hope to open sometime in September. Stay tuned.

After the jump – a taste of some of what you’ll see on the menu. (more…)

Clarification, Accountability and a New Direction

Over the past 10 days the topic of Paid Sick Leave for Employees has become a hot button issue in DC politics. Last week, when called by a reporter from DCist, I was asked about my position on paid sick leave for tipped employees. I made the unfortunate mistake of speaking on this topic without being fully aware of this law and most importantly, how my staff truly felt on this topic. I was quoted as saying:

“I do my very best as the principal owner to take care of my staff above and beyond what I would argue is 99 percent of the restaurants in the industry, and I do very well at that. But when it comes to the government mandating that I take care of paying my employees in their absence, whether it be from being sick or emergencies or other issues that may arise, I’m not in favor of the government mandating it.”

I would like to apologize for those that I may have offended, most importantly my staff, but the fact is that I love my community and I love my staff even more. While I am not perfect, I would never expect anyone to work when they are sick or otherwise not able to work. I have always worked with our staff in these situations. I would prefer that staff members take the necessary time to get well. However, despite all my good intentions and great track record with the community, local charities and environmental sustainability, I have fallen short on the most important part of Meridian Pint, my staff. I am sorry to you all.

After reading the quote from another restaurant owner who said “paid sick leave is an expense that he and his counterparts can afford” I realized that he is right. While I believe that many restaurants in DC can barely afford to stay open, much less pay for sick leave, Meridian Pint is a great example of a restaurant that can and should afford to go above and beyond this law. Therefore, as of this week Meridian Pint will now offer paid sick leave to all of its employees including tipped employees.

The truth is, that the ‘Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act of 2008’ is one of the most important laws that restaurants must abide by yet most of us in the industry are not aware of it and often overlook it. The attention that has been brought to my doorstep this past week has opened my eyes to the seriousness and magnitude of this oversight. I have become the poster child for so many of us in the restaurant industry who overlook the most basic needs and rights of our staff members. Our staff members are the life of our restaurants and without their good health and commitment we would not exist.

I hope that all of my poor decisions up to and including this past week serve as a
wake up call to all my fellow restaurant owners. We cannot drive our businesses forward without taking care of the most important part of our business, our staff.

I would again like to apologize to my staff for overlooking your most important
needs, your health and your income. Moving forward I will promise to always put
you all first above all other concerns. I would also like to apologize to my
community for not following through on my pledge to be the best gathering place in Columbia Heights. I have let you down and for that I am sorry.

Dear PoPville,

Thanks for posting the “Where’s Your Favorite Chill Brunch Spot?” as last week’s Friday Question. To be honest, though, I can’t afford many of these places. So I wanted to suggest a follow up for readers like me: What is DC’s Best Brunch Bargain? My hope is that readers will highlight places with enjoyable flavors, service, and atmosphere that don’t get the $$$ rating on yelp.

I’m gonna stick with my original answer for favorite chill spot and say Red Derby. Where’s your favorite brunch bargain in town?

This coming soon sign made me chuckle a bit. Thanks to a reader for sending word.  Back in late Feb. we learned that a Smashburger would be coming to the former Lucky Brand Store Space in Dupont Circle. I spoke with one of the workers on the site who said they should be open in about 2-3 months. You can see Smashburger’s menu here.

The former Cafe Atlantico space in Penn Quarter officially opens as Azur today. Check out their menus here.

From a press release:

On April 18, Chef Frederik De Pue will open Azur, his second new restaurant of 2013. The upscale casual contemporary seafood spot is located at 405 8th St., the Penn Quarter building long occupied by Jose Andres’s Café Atlantico and Minibar. De Pue and his partner purchased the space in September, 2012, and have transformed it into a 135-seat ode to the sea, complete with subtle ocean hued accents and hand-made furniture. The menu is a reflection of De Pue’s experience in some of Europe’s best seafood kitchens, including the Michelin-starred Sea Grill restaurant in his native Belgium.

“The key to great seafood is cooking simply and with respect for your ingredients, and with Azur I can show off that kind of cuisine,” said De Pue. “It’s going to be a little bit contemporary and a little bit classic. A little bit Washington and a little bit Brussels. But from top to bottom, this is going to be a true seafood restaurant.”
