Back in July we learned that a new Dunkin Donuts was coming to 12th and G St, NW. I stopped by yesterday and was told, permits permitting, they should open this Thursday. And coming to the retail space next door, the downtown BID reports it will be a Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich Shop. Updates when they get closer to opening.

Jimmy John’s opened their first two DC stores at 14th and L St, NW and 1717 Pennsylvania Ave, NW. They also have plans to open one in Glover Park at 2428 Wisconsin Ave, NW.

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know anything about Tabaq on U st being closed? The last time I was there one month ago, I was told it was sold to someone else. I emailed them a couple of weeks ago to have an event there and I was told it is closedAny idea what is going on there?”

Washington Business Journal reported:

“According to the property sales records, the Cham Restaurant Group, based in Silver Spring, bought the property for $4 million in late July. The Cham Restaurant Group is led by chef Howsoon “H.O.” Cham, the Gambia-born D.C. chef who previously owned Red Ginger restaurant in Georgetown and the French-Caribbean Cafe Tropé in Dupont Circle, both of which are now closed.”

And this sign was just posted:

Update on Thally coming to 1316 9th Street, NW.

From a press release:

“Bringing new flavor to 9th St. NW in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC, Thally serves Modern American Cuisine created by Chef and Co-Owner Ron Tanaka, along with a rotating list of wines and craft beers, custom cocktails, housemade sodas, and unique spirits in a 70 seat restaurant which includes a 14 seat bar. The restaurant hopes to open on or about Tuesday, August 27th.

A Dream Realized

Thally is the brainchild of two good friends who have been talking about opening up their own casually elegant restaurant in Washington, DC for years. Chef & Co-Owner Ron Tanaka and General Manager & Co-Owner Sherman Outhuok finally found the perfect place, on a burgeoning block of 9th St. NW near the DC Convention Center, and Thally was born. Thally was conceived to be a comfortable and inviting neighborhood restaurant, as well as a destination worthy of Washingtonians crossing the city to discover our mouthwatering cuisine.

Our name pays tribute to our Shaw neighborhood as well as our families: “Thally” refers to the Tally-Ho Stables (built in 1883) located in Naylor Court directly behind our restaurant, as well as to Thalia, Sherman’s daughter. (Thally is pronounced without saying the “h”, as in Tally-Ho.) The interior décor also reflects the character of Thally’s surrounding neighborhood. Design details include: exposed brick, reclaimed wood, vintage barn-door hardware, blackboards, antique pipe fittings, leather seating, substantial wood and steel tables, and a 28 ft. absolute black granite bar with leather-finish. Our logo and the custom wall graphics created by local graphic designer/ artist Matthew Hlubny for Thally’s dining rooms and bathrooms feature images of the antique stables, row-houses and carriage houses that are characteristic of the Blagden Alley-Naylor Court designated historic district in the Shaw neighborhood, contained between O and M Streets and 9th and 10th Streets.”

1830 14th Street, NW

Big news from the Washington Business Journal:

“The Amsterdam Falafelshop at 1830 14th St. NW will be the first franchise of the original Adams Morgan spot for late-night eats, according to Josh Miller of Pulse Property Group, who represented the tenants in the deal. Amsterdam Falafelshop’s other D.C. location is at 2425 18th St. NW.”

1830 14th Street, NW was formerly home to the Arts@1830 gallery which closed in Dec. 2012 and before that was home to the L and N thrift store.

I think Amsterdam Falafel will do phenomenal here (just a block away from the recently opened Ted’s Bulletin.) WBJ also reports that this location plans on serving Dutch beers too – stay tuned.

Thanks to @Greg_Hudson for tweeting us the photo:

“Someone is finally coming into the former Casa Nonna space on Conn Ave, STK”

Back in January we learned STK would be taking over the former Casa Nonna space at Connecticut and N Street, NW.

STK’s website says:

STK artfully blends two concepts into one—the modern steakhouse and a chic lounge. The restaurant’s signature DNA includes plaster cast horns, curvilinear black platform seats and a palette of black gloss and cream. A large central lounge area is furnished with creamy leather banquettes and textured crocodile tiles, and is surrounded by an elevated dining room for more formal dining. Theatrical lights illuminate each table, while smoky mirrors allow patrons to catch a glimpse of the surroundings while a DJ creates an energetic vibe throughout the entire space.

As anticipated, steak is the main attraction. With a female-friendly mindset, STK offers small, medium and large cuts of meat, as well as naturally raised options and market fresh fish entrees. Aside from steak, signature items include Parmesan Truffle Fries; Lil’ BRGs; Shrimp Rice Krispies; Sweet Corn Pudding; and Jump Lump Crab Salad.

@Greg_Hudson also sends this video for STK’s London opening:

Good news for pizza fans near the Whitehouse – Custom Fuel Pizza opens up on Tuesday. I stopped by for a taste and I can vouch that Brooklyn Bridge (full menu after the jump) was delicious:

IMG_4350

Custom Fuel is a bit different from Fuel’s current locations as it sounds, these pizzas are totally custom – think Chipotle/Potbelly ordering style. This will be their first location rolling out the Custom brand. And as we learned earlier in the month – you’ll be able to order beer here as well.

And in other good news – the plans for 2301 Georgia Ave, NW are still on track and that location will open in about 12 weeks. The Georgia Ave Fuel will not be a Custom but will resemble the Fuel restaurants in Chinatown and on K Street. I was psyched to spot the blueprints for Georgia Ave:
