From an email:

“Menu MBK will be hosting a preview of its market space on Thursday, Dec. 19. Frederik De Pue and his team will be opening the ground floor component of the three-tiered concept for a Holiday Market that will offer a special selection of seasonal treats and market stalls showcasing a number of local vendors.

The Holiday Market will be open from 3pm to 7pm. And feature:

Complementary hot chocolate and Chapel Hill Farm veal meatballs
Market stands staffed by representatives from DC Cured, Bounty Hill Farms and Junius Coffee
Items from the kitchen at Menu, including apple cider, soup, holiday cookies, macaroons, sticky buns, candied apples and Belgian waffles.

Slated to open in mid-January, Menu MBK (Market, BistroBar, Kitchen) will include a ground floor market offering local produce and goods as well as coffee and pre-made meals. The mid-level BistroBar will serve a wide variety of beer, wine and cocktails accompanied by casual bar bites and small plates. The top floor will hold Menu Kitchen, a 40-seat restaurant serving lunch and dinner seven days a week and featuring a similar take on the comforting European country cooking that has made De Pue’s Table a hit in Shaw.”

From a press release:

“In the works for more than a year, Silo restaurant hopes to open its doors to DC’s Mt. Vernon Square neighborhood shortly after Christmas. The restaurant’s name represents its raw and industrial interior as well as the fresh ingredients and grains used in its cuisine. It will accommodate 20 people at the bar and 50 people in the dining room.

Created, designed and built by first-time restaurateur Reza Akhavan, who become known in DC’s restaurant community during his tenure as Manager of The Front Page, and then as the Opening GM of Shaw’s Tavern. Working alongside Akhavan as Restaurant Manager will be Charlotte Devilliers, most recently with Northside Social Coffee Shop and Wine Bar. Silo’s kitchen will be helmed by Executive Chef George Vetsch. From 2009-2013, Chef Vetsch was Executive Chef (American Classic cuisine) at C.F. Folks. During his tenure there, the restaurant was awarded the 2013 James Beard Award, Classic American Restaurant and the 2013 RAMMY Award, Casual Restaurant of the Year.

Excited to be back in the kitchen of a brand new restaurant just as it starts out, Swiss-born, and trained in French cuisine, Chef Vetsch has designed Silo’s menu on Contemporary American cuisine with a Swiss/French twist that pays homage to his heritage.

Some of his dishes to look forward to include:

§ Kohlrabi Soup with Appenzeller Cheese Fondue and Fennel Oil
§ Mussel’s Gratinée in a Vermouth Leek Sauce
§ Fried Pumpkin Purses with Eggplant Tomato Mousse and Garlic sautéed Spinach on Cauliflower Sauce
§ Potato crusted Branzino on sautéed Spinach with Tomato-Olive-Caper Concasse in a Fennel Soubise

I stopped in Catch 15 over the weekend and the buildout is nearly completely finished. The folks inside told me the grand opening will be the week of Christmas though it’s possible a soft opening could happen before then. While the inside wasn’t photo ready when I stopped by – you can tell it’s gonna be pretty nice. There is a huge bar and lots of table and booth seating too. The menu is not yet live on their website but as we previously learned:

“Sit at our ice bar, in the window or inside for fresh oysters & clams, try an amazing variety of small plates, sandwiches and entrees inspired by the international vibe of all that DC has to offer–intriguing and indulgent casually-sophisticated dining in the heart of DC’s K Street corridor. Indulge in seductive flavors, relive classics and savor sophisticated pairings with signature creations. Enjoy dining al fresco or relaxing indoors for Brunch, Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner or Late Night socializing–simply irresistible!”

“Dear PoPville,

What Happened to Port of Piraeus on 21st Street NW? Late last month they seem to have just disappeared. Their Facebook page is very vague about why they closed. Any ideas?”

On their facebook page they responded to a query about the closing:

“Thank you Delores, we miss you too! Please visit us at our other location at 13 and I streets, or on the web at www.portofp.com for catering.”

Anyone hear why they closed?

Word on the street is that these tacos are awesome. Anyone try one yet?

From their Clovest fundraising page:

“Milk Cult X Vigilante Coffee: Bangin’ Brunch-ish tacos + quality coffee + ice cream = Milk Cult Sanctuary

You probably already know Milk Cult as DC’s first motorcycle based mobile ice cream vendors (if you didn’t -you do now). Well, get excited, the duo is gearing up for their next project.

Enter: The Sanctuary.

Milk Cult’s pop-up style Cafe. They are creating a space for people to come and stay a while, where they can enjoy the highest quality of coffee, food, and soak up the Milk Cult experience. The Sanctuary will provide a full espresso bar, free wi-fi, and a full fledged savory program featuring their take on brunch-style tacos. Basing their operation out of Union Kitchen, the pop-up cafe is a springboard for Ed and Patrick’s passion for quality food in a welcoming atmosphere.”

You can read more background info here and make a loan here.

The Washington Post reported:

“The pop-up will be open from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. during the week and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends…does breakfast tacos ($3 apiece, or three for $9) with a twist: Scrambled eggs come atop flour tortillas with corned beef hash and arugula, or bacon and chives. Mine, with a tater-tot hash (yes!), tomatillo and a foam of lemony hollandaise, might have been the biggest departure from an actual taco, but it was tasty nonetheless.”

Thanks to all who sent the sad word of Moroni and Brothers Pizza closing at 4811 Georgia Ave, NW. Moroni and Brothers opened up back in 2007 and for a while had some of the best pizza in town. There is now a very sad voice mail when you call them – saying they’ve closed for they don’t know how long and something about getting in trouble. Moroni was definitely a pioneer and while they strayed a bit from the original focus on Neapolitan pizza – they will be missed by many. Hopefully, they’ll be able to reopen at some point and return to their original glory. You can still see their delicious pizza menu here.
