“Is this a @Potbelly I see coming to 7th and H? @PoPville”

The Potbelly will be located in the former Subway sandwich shop right next to the future Cava Grill (the former  Capital Q BBQ space.) A Potbelly was previously located in Chinatown nearby at 726 7th Street, NW which today is a Lime Fresh Mexican Grill. Whew.

Last week we we got a brief update on EatsPlace coming to Georgia Ave across from Looking Glass Lounge. Now lots more details including their first chefs in residence.

From a press release:

“A new range of flavors is coming to the District as EatsPlace announces its first round of resident chefs: Charles Lyons and Jason Gehring. EatsPlace’s chef-in- residence program begins a rotation designed to broaden the palette of District dining.

“EatsPlace is thrilled to open its doors in September with such talented chefs on the debut roster,” said Katy Chang, managing member of EatsPlace. “It really is a coup to have Chef Lyons and Chef Gehring – two District-based chefs— at EatsPlace, and I’m excited to see what each of them will bring to the dining scene.”

Charles Lyons, executive chef of DC Born and Raised, brings his individual take on traditional Southern favorites to EatsPlace. His “elevated soul food” concept features local ingredients and encompasses everything from sweet to savory. Lyons is a former chef at District favorites such as Georgia Brown’s, Hill Country and Mari Vanna.

Jason Gehring, executive chef of Mason Dixie Biscuit Company, focuses on creative dishes based on biscuits. His career as a pastry chef has landed him at some of the District’s most popular restaurants, including Table, Astro Doughnuts and Chicken and Fiola. (more…)

Penn Commons opened today in Chinatown by the Verizon Center across the street from Grafiato and Daikaya. Check out their menus here:

“Whether you are popping in for a quick bite before a Verizon Center event, or your want a full dinner at your leisure, we have just the menu for you!

With the resurgence of the local farmer and great American products, chef Jeff Tunks has cultivated partnerships with specific purveyors nearby… or has just made it himself. It just takes having one common philosophy: American sensibility joined with American seasonality. Penn Commons sources the highest quality ingredients whether it is local artisanal or abroad.

The menu offers a raw bar, charcuterie plate, a selection of regional entrees from across America, signature Burgers and Sandwiches as well as snacks and bites such as Custom trios of Dips & Spreads. The bar menu is available late and features casual fare perfect for enjoyment before or after events and games at the Verizon Center.”

And their facebook page says:

“Beer lovers assemmmmble! 40 craft beers are on tap representing each ale-producing state in the US from Colorado staples to small indie brews that might be your next favorite.”

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“The former Moroni Bros has a sign up now. Something called Okapi?”

[The okapi, also known as the forest giraffe or zebra giraffe, is a giraffid artiodactyl mammal native to the Ituri Rainforest, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. Although the okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of zebras, it is most closely related to the giraffe. The okapi and the giraffe are the only living members of the family Giraffidae.

The animal was brought to prominent European attention by speculation on its existence found in popular press reports covering Henry Morton Stanley’s journeys in 1887. A 2013 study determined there are 10,000 okapis remaining in the wild, down from 40,000 a decade ago.]

Updates as more info is known and Okapi gets closer to opening.

From an email:

“Michael Schlow’s TICO restaurant will start brunch service this weekend, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am – 3pm. On the menu guests can expect Latin and Spanish influences on American brunch staples, such as a duck confit and green chile hash with poached eggs and hollandaise ($12), a twist on eggs benedict; and open faced omelets ($12) with three different choices including: pork belly, potato, oaxaca cheese and green chile sauce; 14th St. Farmer’s Market veggies with local goat cheese; or asparagus, serrano ham, avocado, manchego and piquillo peppers. On the sweeter side, caramelized banana pancakes with crunchy hazelnuts ($11) and cinnamon raisin stuffed french toast ($11) round out the menu. A crunchy and spicy fried chicken with maple butter will come with fennel cole slaw and fries ($13).

On the cocktail front, the popular hibiscus margarita appears alongside new brunch sips including a bloody chancho ($11) with bacon infused reposado tequila, house bloody mary mix, and a “tico”rashi rim—Schlow’s riff on the Asian spice mixture, togarashi–made with sea salt, chile de arbol, cayenne, coriander and lime zest. Two coffee cocktails include the mommy’s happy ($10), inspired by travels to Spain, made with Patrón XO Café, Frangelico, Nescafé, iced coffee and milk; and the good morning ($10) made with Patrón XO Café Dark Cocoa, Bailey’s, iced coffee, cream and cinnamon.”
