Lots of folks have been emailing about the new paint job at the former Lavandou space in Cleveland Park next to Nanny O’Briens. Word on the street is that it’s going to be the new home of Coppi’s. Their website currently says “Updated contact information coming soon!”

But perhaps of greater interest is news of who’s going to take over Coppi’s (and Utopia’s) old space on U Street. Washington Business Journal reports:

“District Distillery recently sought approval to open a combination distillery and restaurant at one of the city’s hottest intersections, 14th and U streets NW, according to plans submitted to the D.C. Zoning Administrator. The concept would encompass more than 7,000 square feet at 1414 and 1418 U Street, formerly home to Coppi’s Organic and Utopia restaurants, respectively.”

Updates when progress is made:

We suspected the new Thai X-ing location was super close to opening. I spotted the sign below on their Florida Ave spot during my walkabout Sunday:

Note, effective 9/30, the 515 Florida Ave location will no longer be serving alcohol.

From Kushi‘s facebook page:

“It is with great disappointment to announce that Kushi Izakaya & Sushi is closing. Our last day is this Sunday, September 28th.

There have been many new friends that have walked through the door since we opened four and a half years ago, and we leave with fond memories. We truly appreciate all of the loyal customers that have supported us all this time.

With one door closing, another door opens for us as we look forward to the future and new opportunities. Please stay connected to our Facebook page and website for news of our next project coming soon.

Thank you all and we hope to see you again.”

CityPaper’s Jessica Sidman reports:

“Norris is already moving on with another Japanese concept. He says he’s signing on a lease this week for the former Homemade Pizza Co. space at 1522 14th St. NW.”

HomeMade pizza closed back in June at the corner of 14th and Church St, NW. Updates when the new Japanese restaurant gets closer to opening:

That was fast. Zabver in the former Adam Express space soft opened on Sunday. Like Adam it’s still a small carryout space but the menu looks good. In a brief chat I was also told that the owners are the same folks from Asian Spice in Chinatown. Though the menu is likely to change a bit you can check out the soft opening menu after the jump. Anyone stop by for an early taste? (more…)

Last week I noted a new restaurant possibly called Yaffa’s was coming to the former Poboy shop on 19th St just north of M. I was close – the owners email me and say Yāfa Grille is coming towards the end of October:

“Yāfa Grille Shawarma•Falafal•pita

We are five brothers and We freshly make pita in shop with fresh vegetables and ingredients every day. Placed on a service line where you can top off your pita, bowl, salad or entrée. Our shawarma and Falafals are made fresh everyday with a touch of classic and traditional middles eastern technics and ingredients to give you the taste of the middle east cuisine.”
