Danny Todd’s Facebook page says:

“Danny Todd’s is a newly renovated cafe and lounge in DC. We serve seafood and barbecue along with breakfast all day!”

They’re located in the former Chef Corner Cafe space at 13th and H St, NE across from the old library kiosk and current 5×5 exhibit:

Already pretty big but super popular so very good news. I’m guessing it’ll wrap around onto 1st Street? From a liquor license placard out front:

“Requesting expansion of sidewalk café seating from #38 to #99.”

Sidewalk cafe hours are listed as Sunday through Wednesday: 7am-10:30pm and Thursday through Saturday: 7am-11:30pm.

From an email:

“Wednesday @ 5:30, we’re inviting everyone to come and celebrate 2 years of Green Hat Gin with us and the boys from New Columbia Distillers. We’ll be pouring original and seasonal batches to bring you cocktails from the past and present. Get ready!”

We knew this prime corner property couldn’t be sitting vacant forever – a liquor license placard posted out front finally reveal the plans for a:

Sports bar and grill, serving hamburgers, French fries, pizza and sub-sandwiches with a seating capacity of 41 inside. Total occupancy load of 50. Sidewalk café with 22.”

In June the eastern end of H Street saw the opening of Halftime Sports Bar but is still waiting for progress at Sin Bin sports bar across the street.

It’s located a few storefronts east of the recently opened DC Harvest:

Some interesting scuttlebutt from a reader after hearing of Casa Blanca’s recent closure:

“Chipotle and Native Foods were vying for the retail space in the building (which recently had a $10 million renovation, hence the removal of the granite on the facade.)… seemed to indicate they preferred Chipotle.”

Recently we learned a new Chipotle would likely be taking over the former Mixtec space in Adams Morgan and Native Foods Cafe just opened their first DC location at 18th and M St, NW. Updates when we learn the new tenant here.

Thanks to all who sent emails. Dinner Lab’s website says:

“Dinner Lab is a social dining experiment that unites undiscovered chefs with adventurous diners who are looking for something different from the conventional restaurant experience. Our events bring together a group of interesting strangers around a common table to share cuisine crafted by up-and-coming chefs from all over the country.

We don’t dictate what our chefs cook, but instead give them a platform to tell a story through their menus – recipes that speak to their background or heritage, ingredients they are passionate about, or completely new dishes they’ve been experimenting with on days away from the restaurant. Our platform flips the traditional “dinner out” on its head by putting chefs at the center stage and giving our diners a voice in the process. Each time you attend an event, your feedback and suggestions are shared with the chef so that he or she can iterate and improve on their menu concept. With your input, aspiring chefs are given the tools they need to effectively prototype new dishes and tweak recipes to help them create the next great restaurant concept.”

Updates when the dinners start. You can get on the DC membership wait list here.

This is the space formerly home to King-N-I and more recently Open Kitchen Diner. Anyone remember, one of my favorites, Seafood & Things before that?

zentan
1155 14th Street, NW

From an email:

“Yo Matsuzaki, formerly Corporate Chef for Ozumo Concepts International – Northern California in San Francisco and Oakland, has joined the Zentan team as Executive Chef. A native of Japan, he spent his formative years spent working under Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto after developing a strong foundation in French cuisine at the Institute of Culinary Education and multiple French restaurants in New York. Matsuzaki’s goals for Zentan include building on the restaurant’s signature robata grill and omakase experiences while embracing more of an izakaya style dining experience reflective of flavors from his childhood.

Chef Yo will preview some of his menu items during Zentan’s signature Thursday omakase nights beginning October 16. Omakase starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday nights and costs $65 per person for up to five seats overlooking the sushi bar. Because of the extremely limited space and thoughtful sourcing from as far away as Japan’s Tsukiji Market, cancellations are required nine days in advance. Reservations can be made at 202-521-1414.”

Ed. Note: I’m told the new full menu should be released in November.
