“After 40 years, the purveyor of mouthwatering pizza in the Southeast, Mellow Mushroom, is adding beef and veggie burgers to their already eclectic menu. These were previewed at select locations in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina & Texas this summer, but as of October 1, 2015 they will be available at Mellow Mushroom locations nationwide.

The beef burger (Carnie) is made of 100% choice, all natural, certified Black Angus Beef. The beef is humanely raised and minimally processed, using no additives or ammoniated procedures. It will be available with Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, romaine lettuce, tomato, pickles and garlic aioli spread.

The veggie burger (Herb)
, which can stand up to any beef patty, consists of kale, quinoa, roasted mushrooms, and brown rice among other seasonings and vegetables. These hearty, house-made patties are made with the highest-quality ingredients. The veggie patty will be prepared with Cheddar cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, sweet onions and fresh avocado.”

Guilty pleasure confession: One of my favorite shows is Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. If you’re uninitiated it’s a show where 90’s emoji Guy Fieri visits restaurants around the country. I can’t be sure what it is exactly – how Fieri bleaches only the inner bit of his goatee or unironically uses phrases like “that’s killer!” and “off the hook!” – but if I’m in a hotel room there’s an 85% chance that show is on.

After an embarrassing number of hours spent with Food Network however, I’ve become disappointed with how rarely Guy Fieri visits my city. Across 22 seasons Guy Fieri has been to DC only four times. And it’s not like he hasn’t been in the neighborhood. He’s been to fifteen Baltimore restaurants and visited Virginia Beach, a city two-thirds the size of DC, seven times. So what’s Guy Fieri’s DC problem? (more…)

From a press release:

“A talented veteran of many top kitchens in D.C., New York and San Francisco, and the guiding force behind Cork Market & Tasting Room’s popular food program, is stepping up to fill the shoes of departing Cork Wine Bar Executive Chef Kristin Hutter.

The wine bar’s new Executive Chef, Jason Schreuder, is a graduate of the International Culinary Center (formerly the French Culinary Institute) in New York City and also a former sous chef both at Cork under the wine bar’s first chef, Ron Tanaka, and at Cleveland Park’s popular and inventive fixture, Ripple. His wide-ranging background includes stints at Jean-Georges’ Mercer Kitchen, BLT Fish and San Francisco’s Absinthe and NoPA.

Jason plans to change the menu seasonally to create shareable plates using simple, good ingredients that highlight seasonal flavors and complement the extensive selection of Old World wines. Avocado bruschetta fans can rest easy, however, as a few favorites will remain on the menu, and a renewed focus on vegetable centered plates is planned. Jason is also preparing new wine & food pairing and special tasting menus.

“Jason’s tremendous work for us at the Market and his experience in some of our favorite kitchens, made this an easy decision when Kristin decided to move on,” said Cork Wine Bar owner Diane Gross. “We are very excited about the menu ideas and changes that Jason has already put in motion.”

Kristin will continue to work with Cork as a consultant on special projects, including helping to launch a weeknight dinner program at Cork Market. Both Gross and her husband and co-owner Khalid Pitts praised Kristin for her tremendous work at Cork Market and Cork Wine Bar. “Kristin is a talented chef and has been an important part of our team over the past six years,” Pitts said. “While we are sad to see her go on a permanent basis, we are thrilled that she will be helping us out on a few new projects at Cork Market.”

Ninella‘s (formerly Park Cafe) near 13th St, SE, and East Capitol St appears to be closed and the Lincoln Park Kitchen & Wine Bar will be taking it’s place. “Coming soon” banner and menu attached.”

You can see their menu in PDF here – LINCOLN PARK KITCHEN & WINE BAR (PDF). Their twitter page says they’ll be opening in 3 weeks. Barred in DC reports:

“The new spot comes from Howsoon Cham, former chef and owner of short-lived Newtown Kitchen, a lounge that closed earlier this year on U street in the old Tabaq space.”

Ed. Note: Photos of the menu are a bit difficult to read but posting after the jump. (more…)

“I walked by El Sol on 11th between M and N (next to Capital Market) and it is OPEN! I tried to find their website but the only El Sol that came up was the one on 14th in Columbia Heights. Are they related?”

Ed. Note: They are related. This is the former home to the often in trouble El Sauce. I peeked in on Sunday and the new space looks nice – no frills but sparkling clean.

From a press release:

“In the latest of a recent flurry of retailer leasing activity at The Yards, Forest City, the project’s master developer has announced today that Brooklyn Winery, the popular urban winery based in that New York City borough, has signed a lease for exclusive use of a new building to be developed at the north edge of Yards Park at the corner of Water and Fourth Streets SE.
To be aptly named District Winery, it will be the first urban winery within the District of Columbia and will feature the most popular components of its sister winery in Brooklyn— namely, a full-service restaurant and wine tasting area, a private events space with an open-air terrace and, of course, an impressive collection of wines, crafted and aged onsite.

District Winery will occupy 16,000 SF as the sole tenant of a new pavilion building to be developed by Forest City just east of the existing Lumber Shed, which is home to several restaurants itself including Osteria Morini, Agua 301, Due South and Ice Cream Jubilee. The new building has been designed with a striking façade of alternating wood and glass to complement both the Lumber Shed and the surrounding Yards Park. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2016 with opening projected for fall 2017.

Brooklyn Winery has become a very popular venue for weddings and other family events and private parties, as well as a distinctive space for business events. With a sleek new building complemented by natural waterfront beauty, District Winery is poised to take that popularity to a new level in DC.”
