Back in August of 2016 there was a Ping Pong Closure scare (so much for the Wahlburgers too eh?) Looks like time is finally up. Calls for confirmation go to a filled up voicemail box. Updates when we learn what becomes of the space.

From an email:

“The Pig is giving away 100 free hot dogs this Friday, February 9th. More specifically, they’re giving away the Boss Hogg Dog, which is a special available only during lunch on Friday (the only time The Pig serves lunch throughout the week) and is pretty fancy for a frankfurter with toppings that include foie gras aioli, smoked gouda cheese, cognac mustard and more. The giveaway will take place from 11:30 AM-3 PM or until they run out of dogs.

Thanks to Amelia for sending:

“I live across from Hilltop Bar and Grill and saw a few weeks ago that it’s closed for kitchen renovations. Well today I noticed they were painting on a new restaurant name! Looks like now it will be called Napoli Pasta Bar. Know any more details??”

Anyone hear more about the plans? Updates as more on the plans are known.

1946 New Hampshire Ave, NW just south of U off 16th

Back in August we first shared the news that tacos would be coming to the former Yamas space (and Subway before them) at 16th and U Street, NW on New Hampshire.  Been getting lots of status request messages and am happy to share that they will be “rolling soon”:

391 Morse Street, NE

From a press release:

“Husband-and-wife baking duo Tom Wellings and Camila Arango are bringing their sweet treats — and savory ones, too — to the Union Market District tomorrow, February 3 with Pluma by Bluebird Bakery.

“Pluma by Bluebird Bakery will offer morning and afternoon pastries, sandwiches, tartines, salads and Roman-style pizza as well as Stumptown coffee, beer and wine”

The new café concept, which began as a pop-up coffee shop at Prequel, will be located inside The Edison (391 Morse Street NW), the new 178-unit apartment complex near Union Market featuring 28,000 square feet of retail space on the ground level.

In addition to a robust menu of morning and afternoon pastries, such as quiche, croissants, tarts and shortbreads, Pluma will serve sandwiches, tartines, salads and Roman-style pizza as well as Stumptown coffee, beer and wine.

Local seasonal produce will factor heavily on the menu, which will continue to include well-known favorites like kouign-amann, a pastry from Brittany, France. Pluma is an expansion of Wellings and Arango’s Bluebird Bakery brand, a wholesale distributor of baked goods and coffee servicing 16 cafés and culinary hubs in the D.C. region, including Union Market. Big news from Tom Sietsema:

“Food flash: Massimo Fabbri, late of @RistoranteTOSCA, today purchased Thally and plans to turn the Shaw storefront into San Lorenzo by April. “We want people feel as if they’ve stepped into Tuscany,” says the chef. On the menu: rabbit, ribolita, steak Florentine. #CantWait”

Thally’s last day is Saturday.
