The 900-square foot corner building is slightly larger than the original Calabash and features large bay-windows and a stunning “Mid-century meets Marakesh” design courtesy of A Muse Creative & Design. Glittery jewel-toned walls are accented by Egyptian pendant lamps and a live-edge wood bar, while seating and other accents, like custom ottomans and pillows from Turkey, are as flavorful and intricately designed as Calabash’s tea menu. Takes me back to the epic $16 burger debates of ’07.

DJ Winterman tags us from the Wharf and notes:

“The wharf renovation project is exactly what people are talking about when Gentrification is brought up… There is really no good reason why a hot dog should ever cost $8 and why an outdoor food stand shouldn’t also accept cash. Pho 79 opened on Friday! An early word on Yelp is pretty good:

“Great addition to the neighborhood. Very well done pho, good broth and a lot of options of meat that goes in. The grilled pork noodle bowl was on point. The house made chili oil, lemonade drinks and Vietnamese coffee was on point.”

Peep the menu.

From an email:

“My project partner Sara Abdel-Rahim and I have organized a non-profit dinner series named Tables Without Borders to support refugee and asylum-seeking chefs in the DC area. On each night of World Refugee Week (June 17-22), a popular DC restaurant (A Rake’s Progress, Espita, Little Sesame, Maydan, and Himitsu) will welcome an emerging refugee or asylum-seeking chef into the kitchen and offer a unique menu combining the restaurant and chef’s signature flavors. A portion of all proceeds will benefit HIAS, a leader in refugee resettlement and advocacy.”
