Yesterday Sonia tweeted “Torchy’s Tacos Can you please put a Torchy’s at 1800 M St NW in D.C.? I promise you, business would be good!”

I had never heard of Torchy’s but based on the replies people really really love them. So it’s time to play (and please do remember remember, playing is not mandatory if this ain’t your thing) what chain would you love to see in D.C.? You can see what folks pined for in 2015 here and in 2009 here. So who/what are you pining for today?

TLDR: A laptop may or may not have been stolen from a restaurant – what’s the restaurant’s obligation to their guests?

“Dear PoPville,

A man was walking past us when three men run up after him in gray pants and vests. They asked him what he was doing “in the restaurant”. He claimed to be looking for a friend. He was carrying a shopping bag and a laptop sleeve or zip up binder case. As I listened, I learned he had walked into the restaurant and rummaged through the coat rack kept near the entrance and then left. They asked to look through his bag. He said yes and emptied out the plastic shopping bag. It contained socks and a hat and possibly some toiletries. This made me believe he was homeless due to how it was all folded and clean but not in any packaging along with the clothes he was wearing. They then asked to see the laptop sleeve. He refused and argued with them. (more…)

From a press release:

“THE GRILL from KNEAD Hospitality + Design, in partnership with Chef Roberto Santibañez, is a contemporary, upscale American bar and grill opening tonight for dinner in D.C.’s District Wharf. The menu focuses on American cuisine with an emphasis on wood-fired steaks, seafood and lighter vegetarian fare. The modern, 5,400 square foot eatery was inspired by the years that KNEAD’s founders, Jason Berry and Michael Reginbogin, lived in Miami. The space features a sophisticated South Beach-inspired décor in an intimate setting. The Grill is the second concept at The Wharf from KNEAD and Santibañez – the team also opened Mi Vida, a contemporary Mexican restaurant, in 2018. (more…)

500 H Street, NE

From an email:

“Restaurateur Asad Sheikh is expanding his latest venture Butter Chicken Company, a fast casual concept, to the H Street NE corridor. Located at 500 H Street NE, this outpost solely dedicated to India’s iconic dish Butter Chicken, opens Tuesday, February 18th. Similar to the downtown DC location, only 300 servings are prepared per day, however the H Street NE restaurant will be open all day long, with 100 servings prepared for lunch and another 200 for dinner. Sheikh previously opened award winning restaurants in Northern Virginia (Curry Mantra London Curry House and 1947), before deciding to focus on Washington, DC. Sheikh opened two locations of Bombay Street Food in Columbia Heights and Capitol Hill in 2019, inspired by the bright and vibrant street food flavors he grew up eating in Bombay. He debuted the original Butter Chicken Company this past fall in downtown DC. (more…)
