I know there are lots of fans of Ethiopian restaurant, Zenebech Injera, located at 608 T St, NW by Florida Ave so I wanted to share news that they’ve applied for a liquor license. Zenebech had also briefly closed last summer. Anyone been back recently?

I also wanted to share the news that the LeDroit Park Civic Association has put together a survey soliciting names for the new community park coming to 3rd and V Streets NW. I’m voting for Ledroit Park Park. You can fill out the survey here.

You can see more info about the park here.

As I mentioned last week, from time to time, I may rejudge a restaurant that has fallen under the radar or experienced some changes. This week I think we should take a look at Burritos Fast which briefly closed in Dec. ’09 but reopened in Jan. at 3213 Mount Pleasant St NW. I just noticed they put a new Tex Mex decal in their window. I think it looks good. For those who’ve eaten their recently – have you noticed any changes? How’s the burritos? Are there any new Tex Mex options?

It’s been about a year and a half since I first posted the Scuttlebutt that IHOP would be coming to DC USA in Columbia Heights. At long last the day has arrived. I stopped in on Mon. to snap some photos and confirm the word on their opening. They are opening at 9am Nov. 16 and closing at 11pm. Starting. Nov. 17 they’ll be opening at 7am and closing at 11pm. And after Thanksgiving they will be open 24 hours!

But more good news – their grand opening will be Nov. 23rd and to celebrate the first 1500 customers will get a free short stack of pancakes. And there you have it. It’s not going to bring world peace but it is going to make many many people very happy. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but for I’m not gonna lie, I shed a tear of joy whilst taking these photos.

Capacity is 220 seats including a banquet room.

IHOP is located on Irving St, NW just west of 14th Street.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

While they’re still waiting on some permits, this looks like it’ll be pretty sweet. From their Web site, Sundevich will:

“A non-traditional space lends itself to a non-traditional sandwich shop. Most sandwich shops in the city have a flavor profile that carries through their entire product line. Whether it be Italian, Jewish, or Middle Eastern influenced, many menu items taste similar to one another which can get a little boring. At SUNdeVICH we wanted to address this fact by using the world as our flavor guide and our immediate backyard for our ingredients. SUNdeVICH offers a wide range of flavors, textures and combinations that may seem familiar but have a distinct twist.

The objective is to provide a wide range of bold flavors by using fresh and local ingredients. Ideally people can eat at SUNdeVICH multiple times a week; and have a completely different dining experience each time.”

You can see their menu here:

I’ll be sure to update when they get closer to opening. This is the space located in the alley behind the Cre8 studio on 9th St, NW.

From a press release:

“Panera Bread will open its first bakery-cafe in Washington, DC located at 1350 Connecticut Avenue NW in Dupont Circle on Friday, November 12, 2010.

The new bakery-cafe in Washington, DC will offer a warm and welcoming environment including intimate seating areas, comfortable chairs, a community table and free WiFi Internet access.

The hours of operation for Panera Bread at 1350 Connecticut Avenue NW are Monday-Saturday 6:00 am-9:00 pm and Sunday 7:00 am-8:00 pm.”

Most folks were pretty psyched when we first learned about this back in Aug.

Many people have heard by now that Social, open since Aug. ’09, had closed yesterday. The question I have are why did they close and when will they reopen? I just got off the phone with one of the owners, AJ Guy, and while he couldn’t completely clear up the picture for me he was able to share a few more details.

Yesterday I was sent a number of emails (sorry for the delay I’ve been away from a computer) mostly seen on facebook saying that they closed due to “a dispute regarding taxes and the ownership group.” AJ said in no uncertain terms that they were not closed as a result of tax problems. They have closed because they “are doing a reassessment from top to bottom of our organization”. He continues, “We have every intention to re-open”.

I pressed him for a timeframe on when they may reopen but he was unable to give me one. If I were a betting man I’d say it will be closed closer to weeks rather than days and a possibility of months. To me it seems to depend whether the space will reopen with the same concept or completely new brand/concept. If they completely rebrand including new investors, this will obviously take more time. There are clearly a lot of decisions that need to be made by a lot of different people and all these variables are being discussed at this time. I have been promised to be kept in the loop on potential reopening dates, whether or not a new ownership team is put together, and whether or not a new concept emerges etc.

But the bottom line is that they have closed for the moment. And unfortunately it is not clear when they will reopen. I promise to update as more info becomes available. Personally, I was a big fan of the space and the people (including a great mix of patrons). I also like how their outdoor space developed (see photo above) and I think overall they were/are great members of the community. I hope they will soon return, as Social or another concept, to contribute to the progress being made on 14th St, NW north of Spring Road and to Columbia Heights in general.

This is an interesting development. Looks like District Lounge & Grille will be closing and Saki will be expanding into the space. From a Saki liquor license application/change:

“Expand the licensed premises to include the entire building at 2477 18th Street, N.W. This expansion will include the space at 2473 18th Street, N.W. which is currently occupied by District Lounge & Grille which will cease to operate after approval of the expansion. This expansion will add an additional 120 seats for dining space as well as create 25 seats for summer garden space.”

In Sept. ’10 we judged Saki. Were there any fans of District?

From time to time, I’m going to revisit some restaurants when I start hearing mixed reviews and/or it’s been a while since we last looked at the space. We last judged 1905, located at 1905 9th Street, NW, back in Jan. ’09. At the time reviews were mostly positive. Lately I’ve been hearing less than glowing reviews. Has the menu changed significantly? You can see their menu here. So what’s the word – is this still a good spot?

Wow, this is pretty big news for Dim Sum fans. Thanks to a reader for sending in the scoop from an employee of the One Dupont Circle building where Ping Pong Dim Sum will go into the old Georgetown Valet and Fed Ex spaces:

I am happy to announce that the American Council on Education entered into a long term agreement with Ping Pong Dim Sum Restaurant to lease the space vacated by Georgetown Valet and FedEx Office. Because of some unanticipated obstructions, for example the requirement to obtain a zoning variance to extend the window line as requested by Ping Pong, the process took longer than we anticipated. However, in the end we feel that we were able to negotiate very favorable lease terms for ACE with an upscale and established restaurant that will add value to the NCHE building and the Dupont Circle business community.

The construction necessary to extend the window line is tentatively scheduled to begin November 28, 2010 and should be complete and ready to turn over to Ping Pong in January 2011. Once turned over to Ping Pong they can start the construction necessary to build out the interior space according to their design drawings. The tentative grand opening for the restaurant is scheduled for 2Q 2011 with much anticipation.

Ping Pong Dim Sum’s first DC location opened at 900 7th Street, NW in Chinatown back in Dec. ’09.
