“Dear PoP,

Rustik, of Bloomingdale, has finally opened up its outdoor seating. I pass by everyday on my bike home from work and was delighted to see it open for the first time last night!”

Sweet! Rustik is located at 84 T St NW (by Rhode Island Ave and First St, NW)

This new restaurant is coming into the new Skanska building at 10th and G St, NW that we judged back in Feb. ’11. A recent liquor license application says:

“Wood burning pizza, sandwiches, and salad with an occupancy load of 184. Request a sidewalk café with a seating capacity of 40 and entertainment endorsement with occasional live music and DJ on weekends only.”

More info when it becomes available.

“Dear PoP,

I remembered you posting about Beau Thai restaurant in the past. Well I stopped there for dinner on Friday and our server informed me that she had just secured a liquor license that afternoon. Yay!

That place has really stepped up its game in the last few months, so can’t wait to see how they’ll fare now that they’ve got the green light for drinks.”

Beau Thai is located at 1700 New Jersey Avenue NW (by R St). Now all they need is their outdoor seating license and this is going to be one very sweet spot!

“Dear PoP,

Do you have any updates on the Pho 14 expansion? The last updates from PoP were back in September 2010 with a predicted November 2010 opening.”

You can see from the photo above that a lot of work has been done to the former Simply Soles space at 1438 Park Road, NW but after stopping in for a chat with the folks at Pho 14 – we are still a few months off from completion. They are currently working on the decorations and design of the space and are still finalizing the new menu items. The best estimate for the unveiling will be in 3-6 months. Stay tuned!

On top the new taqueria coming to 11th and Lamont St, NW in Columbia Heights as well as the recently opened El Centro in Logan Circle comes news of another new Mexican spot for Georgia Ave, NW.

Back in June ’10 we learned that Philadelphia Water Ice Factory had closed at 2620 Georgia Ave, NW. I’m psyched to see a replacement is finally in the works. According to a recent liquor license application a new restaurant called Mama Chuy DC will be:

“Full-service Mexican Restaurant with carry-out and delivery service. No Live Entertainment. Summer Garden with 16. Seating capacity is 16. Total occupancy is 32.”

It sounds like it’ll be a bit small but if the food is good – potentially great news for this long vacant space.

“Dear PoP,

I wonder if you’ve heard any updates or projected opening dates for 3313 11th in Columbia Heights? Last I heard it was going to be a mexican tapas like place with specialty tequila drinks owned by Jackie Greenbaum. I live around the corner and pass by it all the time and have never seen any activity. And now the permit/license thingy on the steel gate is almost torn/falling off.”

Sorry for those who may be nursing a tequila hangover but thanks to a reader for sending an update after this week’s North Columbia Heights Community Association meeting:

“Dear PoP,

Update on the vacant yellow building on 11th & Lamont (3313 11th St, NW). Jackie Greenbaum of Jackie’s and Sidebar in Silver Spring is bringing a funky Mexican cuisine to Columbia Heights. Even though the space is only 800 Sq Ft feet, it will have 24 seats downstairs, 30 seats rooftop and 20 seats outside. The menu will be simple as the kitchen will be small. Jackie also mention that there will always be a $5 margarita and plates will range from $2 to $15. She is also interested in utilizing the public gardens behind the building for restaurant use. All permits have been acquired and the building will start in the next couple of weeks with an opening some time in July or early August.”

11th St, NW keeps getting better and better.

After checking out the new Pinkberry yesterday, I peeked inside the new Shake Shack located directly across Connecticut Ave (technically at the corner of 18th and Jefferson). Anyway, the space is super close to opening and one of the managers I spoke with is anticipating an opening around the week of May 16th. Stay tuned.
