Thanks to a reader for sending word that the building has now gone gray. I think I like the gray better.

Anyway, the space sounds awesome:

Chef Richard Sandoval invites you to gather, dine and raise a glass at El Centro, D.F.
Authentic Mexican comfort food and fine Tequilas are served in three vibrant spaces.

TAQUERIA
A lively open kitchen is the backdrop for the casual taqueria. Eat-in or take your tacos to-go.

where Mixologists craft Latin cocktails and pour from 200 Tequilas & Mezcals.

ROOFTOP
Salud! Raise a glass at the rooftop’s two open-air bars.

If anyone checks them out today/tonight (1819 14th St, NW) – let us know what you think!

We checked out Desperados right after they opened up in the old Polly’s space at 1342 U St, NW back in Aug. 10. Recently every time I walk by the space doesn’t seem to be too crowded (maybe it’s just my odd hours) so I thought I’d check in with folks. Any fans out there?

You can see their menu here.

Incidentally I’m liking that they’ve beautified the outside patio space a bit:

From a press release:

On Tuesday, May 10, 2011, Estadio will open its doors for lunch, offering the Logan Circle community a tempting new mid-day sit-down option, as well as a selection of Bocadillos to go. The contemporary Spanish restaurant will serve lunch Tuesday through Friday from 11: 30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Estadio will offer its complete menu of pinxtos, tapas and raciones (small entrees) for lunch in the main dining room. Signature items, such as Tortilla Espanola with aioli and sweet hot peppers, will be available, along with popular mains, such as the Spice grilled chicken with cabbage slaw, rice and salsa loca and the Seared leg of lamb with roasted shallots. A vast selection of lighter fare options, including the Baby arugula with peppers, hard-boiled egg and boquerones, the Grilled scallions with Romesco and Sheep’s milk cheese, and a variety of Montadillos – open-faced sandwiches with toppings such roasted beets with whipped goat cheese – will also please mid-day diners. Pinxtos and traditional tapas are priced from $4 to $11 per plate, while raciones are priced from $10 to $14.

Executive Chef Haidar Karoum comes to the rescue of busy diners with his new Estadio To Go menu, available only at the bar or for takeout. Priced at $10 per person, guests can choose from a rotating selection of seven Bocadillos (sandwiches), with options such as Cantabrian Sardines with Shaved Vidalia Onions and Farmer Butter, Spicy Lamb Albondigas (meatballs) with Cana de Cabra, and Grilled Marinated Vegetables with Olivada, Idiazabal and Garlic Aioli, all prepared with housemade Ciabatta bread and paired with a small salad.

Estadio is located at 1520 14th Street NW, in between the U Street and Dupont Circle metro stops. For more information, please call 202-319-1404 or visit the website at www.estadio-dc.com.

“Dear PoP,

The serviceable lunch spot with the catchy phrase “Our World is Flatbread” in the downtown-ish area has a notice on it’s door about being sued for eviction at the 900 19th St, NW [19th and I St, NW] location.”

Hmm, their Web site only lists 2238 M St. NW for a DC location. I guess the franchisee got in trouble. Any fans of Sandella’s?

Pho DC is located at 608 H St, NW. They opened up back in Dec. ’10. Their Web site says:

“PHO DC will serve the Vietnamese food which not only has Asian influence, but it also has influence from the French as well. The combination of both French and Asian makes for several amazing dishes. Pho DC emphasis will be on healthy Vietnamese authentic food. In addition to vegetables they are known to use several types of herbs and spices including lemon grass, lime, and kefir lime leaves. Pho DC is in need of a warm and friendly place with excellent food. The Restaurant will feature a cozy dining room and comfortable furnishings and decor with warm tones.”

Despite the unfortunate typo (“Pho DC is in need of a warm and friendly place with excellent food”) the menus sound pretty tempting. You can see their lunch menu here and their dinner menu here.

Any fans?

Thanks to a reader for noticing that V Street Cafe located at 1113 V Street, NW (in the former Gori Cafe space), is no more and in its place is coming Italiano Cafe. I peeked in the window and it looks very close to opening, if it hasn’t opened already. I’m curious to see the menu. We’ll revisit for a judging restaurants post after they’ve been open for a few weeks.

Wow, I didn’t realize the Alero in the Tivoli at 3345 14th St, NW had such a huge outdoor seating area. I think it really improves the feel of that section of 14th St, NW. It’ll be interesting to see if the Z burger adds some outdoor seating options as well. I wonder why the Ruby Tuesday doesn’t offer an outdoor seating option? The large sidewalk seems custom designed for outdoor seating.

On the heels of the great recently confirmed scuttlebutt that Luke’s Lobster Shack is coming to Penn Quarter – I’ve got wind of some equally intriguing news – I’m hearing a specialty Meatball Sub Shop is coming from the owners of BGR (The Burger Joint). I hear it will be located right next door to Luke’s on the 600 block of E St, NW.

You like the sound of meatball sub shop?

I’ll be sure to follow up when/if the info is confirmed.
