“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to send a note that there has apparently been a string of daytime burglaries on and around Maryland Ave NE. My neighbor’s house at Maryland & 11th NE was broken into during the day last week. That same day around noon a man knocked on my door asking for someone who doesn’t live here. A detective called today and told me they’ve seen a big increase in burglaries in the area, with the burglars becoming more “brazen” and that it’s a common tactic for them to knock on the door to see if anyone is home first.”

Alleged package thief in the 1400 Block of Girard St NW

“Dear PoPville,

This guy got into our building in the 1400 Block of Girard St NW on Friday April 17th at approximately 12:10 pm and was able to hide in the building for about 10 minutes. He ripped apart the boxes you see after taking them to the back of the building. He stole one of the packages.

It’s most alarming that he hid in the building upstairs while people exited/walked through the lobby. The cop said he was clearly a pro because of the hat and backpack but that he really lingered carefully looking through packages, which is unusual.

We’ve filed a police report. Some of our residents were able to identify that he’s wearing ironman gear. Any leads are appreciated.”

“Dear PoPville,

I want people to be aware of what I experienced Friday so they can keep an eye out. Around 6:15 – 6:30 I was jogging northbound on the Mt. Vernon trail along the Potomac near Memorial Bridge. An Hispanic/maybe Middle Eastern man, medium skinned with trimmed black hair, stubbly facial hair, 40’s, about 5’6,” with black pants and a burgundy sweater/windbreaker with a black messenger bag that said something like “Community Health,” with an accent, rode past me slowly on a bike, leering. He turned 3 times after he passed me to stare before finally going on. Creepy, but he was moving away from me, and I told myself he must have been looking at something else. I moved on and turned near Arlington Cemetery to cross Memorial Bridge eastbound into DC when creeper guy disappeared along the trail going north toward Rosslyn.

About 15 minutes later, I was eastbound across the bridge still on the Arlington side, when I noticed the shadow of a cyclist approaching me from behind on my left. It was creeper guy. He made a reach for me as he passed (I pulled away so no contact) and then said some cat-callish thing as he slowed and turned on his bike to cut me off. I realized this man must have doubled back to follow me, that he had targeted me, and suddenly I was very scared. I tried to get away while shouting at him repeatedly to get the fuck away, and even threw some water from my bottle at him in hopes of getting him to back off. He yelled back, called me a fucking bitch, and started to get off his bike. Thankfully, two walkers stepped in (very brave, they literally stepped between me and him). Creeper guy took off on his bike across the bridge eastbound toward DC. (more…)

A reader shares from his neighborhood listserv:

“My sister and I were robbed at gunpoint at 8:15 Sunday night. We were on I street NE between 8th and 9th NE.

We were walking on I street, about 30 yds west of 9th street toward 8th. A black male in his 20s ran up from behind us and cut us off from the front, shoved a gun in front of us, and demanded cash and phones. We gave them, he took them and ran west on I street.

We were able to call 911 quickly afterward. They took a suspect into custody near 4th & I Street NE. My sister and I both positively identified the suspect as the man who robbed us. They did not find our phones, and I am not sure whether they found a gun. It’s possible the gun was a toy, but it looked real enough to me. I’m not sure whether or for how long they will detain the guy. Without physical evidence, he may walk even if prosecuted.

Just wanted to make folks aware, and apologize for the police havoc in the neighborhood last night.”
