“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to make you aware of an incident tonight [Thursday]: at around 6:35 pm, I was on M street NE walking from 1st toward North Capitol when I saw a group of three teenage girls.

One of them fired a stun gun at my dog, which thankfully missed. The girl thought it was funny and was doing it as a joke, but if she had hit him, it likely would’ve killed him. I turned around and when I started to move towards the girls, they ran off.

I called the police and filed a report. To the MPD’s credit, I went outside again around 9:30, and there was a cop car parked right in front of where the incident occurred and another up the block plus two officers in my building’s lobby.

Just wanted to make sure people were aware this is a thing dog owners apparently need to worry about now. Has anyone else had problems with teens with tasers in NoMa?”

“Around 12:30 last night 6 shots were fired between the fourth and fifth block of K st. NE. Police taped off the area for a bit to collect shell casings.”

Another reader writes:

“As if the shooting on Riggs weren’t enough violent crime in the neighborhood tonight, there was a robbery earlier in the evening just up 13th St. I was the one who called 911 when the victim was running down 13th St. yelling for someone to call the police because his phone was stolen while chasing another man. As I understand it, two men attacked the victim and tried to choke him before taking his phone. I also understand that MPD has made one arrest in connection with the incident.”

“Mugged at 15th and Rhode Island NW 4/22

I am writing for two reasons: to share a cautionary tale and to rant.

Yesterday, April 22, I was walking North on 15th Street NW at Rhode Island Ave listening to Pandora on my iPhone 5s. My bulky work tote was on my right arm. My iPhone in my left hand attached to the trademark white Apple ear buds dangling down the front of my fuchsia trench coat.

Suddenly, I felt a firm grip on my upper left arm, then on my left wrist, and then my iPhone was ripped from my left hand, abruptly separated from it’s ear bud attachment. Maybe it was the fear of losing the 1,000 pictures of my yorkie or the devastating moment that I realized I’d be cut off from communication for an unknown amount of time that made me turn around and chase the thief. I chased him South on 15th Street, crossing Rhode Island Ave, and sprinting into an ally. From behind, I could tell he was a young kid, about 15 years old, wearing white K Swiss sneakers, khaki pants, a black golf jacket, and a black canvas backpack. He was about six feet tall.

Let me take a minute to gloat. I am twice this perpetrators age and a mere five foot four inches. In this moment, I realized that my daily jaunts at Balance gym have actually been me training for this exact scenario. I never let that winded M-F-er out of my site.

When I ran back into the ally, I realized there was no outlet and the kiddo was hiding. No one was around and I felt concerned that he’d jump out and hurt me. So I surrendered the pursuit and the 1,000 photos of my handsome photogenic boy. I asked a kind woman if I could use her phone to call the police, she handed me her iPhone, and the building manager of the apartment building I was standing in back of came running outside. He had watched the epic chase on his security cameras and rushed my to aid. He said he caught it all on video and we could use the footage to catch the perp. DC police asked the standard questions including a description, if I was hurt, if I needed an ambulance…. I didn’t. They assured me they were in route to my location.

One yerba matte and one hour later, DC police still had not shown. Even though the police would not recover my device, I would have liked to file a police report in case I needed to submit one to insurance or I woke up this morning and my wrist was more hurt than I realized. Neighbors, take note: spring has sprung in DC, the iPhone snatches are abound, and our neighborhoods are void of law enforcement. Hide your phones. And unless your incident is violent or will produce revenue in the form of a traffic fine don’t expect the assistance of law enforcement.”

A reader reports:

“My husband and I live along 14th St, and we heard 6+ shots fired around 11:30pm last night. Within a few minutes there was a heavy police presence on V St NW, between 14th and 15th. The officers were searching the lawn in front of the apartment buildings along the south side of V with flashlights, but I didn’t see an ambulance so I’m not sure whether anyone was injured. No updates on the DC police twitter and nothing was sent out over DC Alerts.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to send this along as yet another advisory on package theft. I live on 4th & I St, NE, and had a package stolen at 3:29 yesterday – less than a minute after it was delivered by UPS. You can’t see the guys face, but he’s wearing a pretty bright red sweatshirt. Can you pass this along in case anyone saw anything, or at the very least as a heads up?

We’ve contacted MPD and UPS, so maybe something will come of it. The UPS delivery man even stuck the package behind our recycling bin. So it’s pretty clear the guy was just following the truck.

Thanks,
Your frustrated neighbor in NE”

“Dear PoPville,

I am a resident of Thomas Street NW. Last night around 10:45 I got out of a cab at 2nd and Thomas since my street is currently closed to through traffic. I pulled out my keys, as I have always been told one walking alone at night should, and saw 3 young men walking down the block toward me. They blocked my way and one grabbed my bag and told me to give it up. I held on to it (and yes, I know this is not what you should do, but in the moment my brain could not seem to accept that I would get mugged within sight of my home) and began screaming the name of my partner who I knew was at home. The guy holding onto my bag punched me in the head, knockin me to the ground, and again tried to take my bag which I continued to hold onto. The three young men then suddenly ran away. I ran toward my home and met my partner who had just emerged having heard my screams.

A man who had also heard me came toward us from 2nd Street and explained that the muggers had run away at seeing him. After checking that I was ok and that the police were on the way, he left us. In our shock did not think to ask him to stay, but the police would like to have a statement from this good samaritan. More importantly to me, because I have doubt that the perpetrators will be found, I would like to find him so I can thank him again and more profusely in person for his bravery and kindness in coming to my aid. I know that the assault could have continued and the situation gotten much worse had he not scared them away.

In addition to finding my good samaritan, I write because I hope to reemphasize to the PoPville readership that there has been a great uptick in crime in Bloomingdale. You have previously reported on a rise in burglary in the area. At least three of the MPD officers I spoke to last night told that criminals are especially targeting the immediate area around the sewage construction at Thomas and 1st. Please be careful walking alone after dark, particularly in this area, and even if it is not that late.”
