A reader reports:

“One of my neighbors (a young woman) was viciously attacked while walking home Monday night at 10 pm. Fortunately, she was close to home and several neighbors heard her scream, chased off her attackers, and called the cops. But they got away, and no one got a great look at them.

Never saw an alert about this assault–how the heck do the police decide what to post?? I would always want to know if my block had a couple of vicious assailants on the loose.

The attack happened near 11th and Otis NW. I heard a crash (her groceries falling) and screaming and by the time I got to the door (dialing 911), my heroic next door neighbor had chased off the attackers. The police response was pretty fast, but as I said, no one got a good look at them and they were long gone (headed toward 10th St down Otis last anyone saw). So as best as I know there are still two dudes who may come up behind you and beat the crap out of you for no reason roaming 11th Street.

Cold weather–not a crime deterrent, it turns out. But folks on 11th St near Otis can be reassured that at least they have great neighbors who will come to their aid.”

“Dear PoPville,

Would you please consider running a post about the crime in Brookland, in particular recent slew of car vandalisms and break-ins along Newton Street NE between 1200 and 1600 blocks? On the 26th of December I walked out onto my front porch to find a group of 6 young black men rifling through my neighbors car. When I realized they clearly weren’t my neighbor I yelled to distract them and then called the police. My neighbor said she had her car locked that evening. On the 29th of December, I was sitting on my couch and heard loud voices on the street early around 1am. When I looked out my front window, I noticed there were about 10 young men inside another neighbor’s car across the street, doors and hatch opened. I quickly grabbed the phone and called 911 and in both cases, the police responded promptly, but unfortunately these men dissipated quickly. My other neighbor also said her car was locked when the police arrived. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I need to give MPD props for an arrest made over the weekend for my break-in that you folks reported on a few months ago:

“Yesterday, just before 12:30 PM, thieves kicked in our front door. Luckily our alarm went off quickly, scaring them off before they took too much and alerting us and MPD quickly. Our family and pets are ok, but they made off with some laptops and one of our cars (keys were on the kitchen counter…) – I love that little car.”

During the investigation, police found a finger print which lead them to issuing an arrest warrant early in December and an arrest over the weekend. I got a call on Monday from the Detective working our case and am looking forward to hearing from the US Attorney this week.

According to the Detective, this particular criminal has been involved in about 10 different break-ins around the neighborhood. He’s currently being held at DC jail on a half-dozen burglary charges and will spend New Years as a guest of the DC justice system.

Well done to the responding officers, our detectives who investigated the case, and ESPECIALLY the officer who took the prints!”
